Strong women's studies programs in the US?

It seems most universities offer a minor in women's studies to those enrolled in its graduate professional programs. Anyone aware of ones w/particularly strong faculty/research going on? Is a doctorate in women's studies available anywhere, or do people usually pursue as much through English/sociology/anthropology departments?

On edit: I'm getting chills reading its pages. It says it's one of 10 free-standing WS departments in the country. Most people pursue terminal master's. If it turns out Washington has a social work school, relocation might be worth looking into (I'm now in DC).

4. U.W. Madison...

I think was the first University in the U.S. to have a women's studies program. I'm not sure which school the program falls under there--I want to say Letters and Science, but not positive. I enjoyed the few classes I took in the subject when I was there, though I don't have a great understanding of how strong the program itself is. It might be worth a visit to their website or a phone call to them at least.

10. I was a religious studies major

undergrad and learned then that 80% of Buddhist studies professors out there are Wisconsin grads. I think Uma Thurman's dad, Robert, who teaches Tibetan studies at Columbia, is an alumnus, too.

I only went there for a few years (English major) then transferred somewhere else so I don't know as much about the many things U.W. Madison is famous for as I could. Thanks for giving me some new information.
