Completely Without Sarcasm, I am Constantly Surprised
by the breadth of knowledge DUers have as a group.

On post in particular this morning had to do with mechanics of filling the breaches in the 17th St levee, how much sand would be needed, and what means of transport could accomplish that. That was very educational.

(Note: I started writing this in response to thatjustly deleted thread, but it stands on its own.)

1. I agree...

The snideness of that deleted post aside, there is an incredible amount of knowledge and experience in so many fields--mixed in, of course with a lot of armchair quarterbacking from a few with more opinion than knowledge. Nonetheless, if one were to survey the education and experience across disciplines on DU, I think it would shock a lot of neysayers.

2. I seriously was not trying to be shitty...
And I don't doubt the breadth of knowledge of my fellow DU'ers.

However....

It just shocks me that so many people are spouting off useless information like they are there! If you are not there, and not in that situation YOU DON'T KNOW. I am aware that there are many DU'ers that have knowledge of educational proportions, but honestly... there are many threads that espouse useless info that causes pandemonium.

I am sorry that I have offended anyone, that was not the point of the thread. Please accept my sincerest apologies.

3. I Know What You Mean, Texasgal
I'm not trying to flame you. And your observation is correct. I'm just taking a glass half-full attitude.

4. Hear, hear!
DUers are an amazing bunch and I don't care who says otherwise. (And they're only focusing on the negative anyway, so $#&@ them!)

6. I don't disagree.
I'm constantly amazed by how much the people here know--and if they don't know it, they're willing to research it for the people that want to know.

7. The access to the vast knowledge base is the best aspect of DU
It is great that for most discussion topics there is at least one DUer who works in the relevant field, has relevant experience, or is highly knowledgeable and willing to inform us. I learn a lot here. There are sometimes the ill-informed opinions posted and ensuing arguments, but I would rather wade through the chaff here than rely on the mass media to inform me. It really is a great collection of people.

8. Yes indeed.
A few years ago I made a sly remark about the hot coffee McDonald's lawsuit and had it thrown right back in my face. I had no idea, the story had always been framed in a way that left no doubt about it. The repies included a lengthy discussion about the shape of the coffee pot and thermodynamics. Seriously I was amazed.

and had radiation burns from cancer treatment in the exact same area. Really unpleasant. I wish *I* could have sued:D

I'm glad you learned from it, mr non-smoking 20lbs lighter underpants!
