How does one transport gasoline?

My cousins and I are thinking about heading down to LA to take our families a generator and some supplies. However we definitely do not want to be a burden on the infrastructure when we get there; also the generators themselves will need gasoline. Is it possible to take some 10 gallon containers of gas or is this just wildly dangerous?

8. You should double check w/ someone about the gas & Yes we did!

They didn't evacuate but are OK. They're in Lacombe, LA. West St. Tammany Parish didn't experience the flooding that the eastern part (Slidell) did. Thank God. My sister-in law had a big tree fall on the house but not the really HUGE live oak tree in the back yard, thank goodness. Cousin Bonnie's house is OK too. No flooding, thank goodness. I still can't believe that they stayed. Our nephew managed to drive to Baton Rouge yesterday and make a pay phone call to his sister in Kentucky. The dogs all made it too.

Yeah, I hear the roads are open between our town and Baton Rouge. And so far we hear that everyone is OK. Phones are still down, of course.

And in the back of an open bed truck, roped or bungeed in, this should be OK.

NEVER store gasoline in the cabin or trunk of a car. That IS wildly dangerous.

4. Properly sealed gasoline containers are relatively safe...

Like those plastic gas cans, etc. Just make sure that it is SEALED, its the fumes that are most dangerous, especially in a contained area, like a car trunk. If you have a truck, put them in the bed, and you should be fine.

6. reasonably safe if you follow precautions.

use only govt-approved containers. put them in the trunk when traveling.
DO NOT smoke around the containers. Look for possible hazards from electrical sparks ets. and stay the hell away. When not traveling, store in well-ventilated area.
In fact, if traveling with gasoine in the trunk, stop periodically, open the trunk and let any fumes out.
KEEP containers tightly closed!

9. If you use a diesel generator, the fuel is less explosive

and you can find alternative fuel methods, like vegetable oil mixed with kerosene, in an emergency. From what I hear, anyway, I've never tried it.
