I gave up everything extra a long time ago..no eating out, no travels, no restaurants, no vacations, no buying anything but food (cheap food) and basic utilities. Buying nothing else. what have you given up?

we have one economy car, and I take the bus as much as possible. Unfortunately, I know what part of the state you're in and buses are not so much of an option there.

I filled the tank of my 1990 Plymouth Acclaim on Sunday afternoon and don't expect to have to do so again for another month.

I work at home, live on a bus line, and walk to as many places as possible. Otherwise, I combine trips.

I don't know if it's my imagination, but I'm seeing a lot more motorcycles, mopeds, and bicycles on the street.

We've given up weekly trips to the liquor store (for Friday night dinner with friends), eating out, having friends over for dinner, weekend trips to the store just to browse. And we don't have a lot of extra expenses, very basic cable and the cheapest internet we could find that still goes at a decent speed. To cut back on that would mean no homework for the hubby and no entertainment for the both of us. Some things we just refuse to give up, especially during football season.

I drive a fuel efficient vehicle and my job is only about ten minutes from my home. I've always been careful about conserving - I make sure I do all my errands in one trip rather than several - so I only fill up about once every week and a half.

My hubby is in a different situation - he drives a Chevy Tahoe as he's a carpenter and needs room for all his tools. He also has a long commute so he's had to pay more. Still, we always take my car when we go out together - his is used only for his job. Even with all that, he sometimes feels as if he's working merely to put gas in the tank.

and instead I'll get on my bike. I'm a stay at home parent anyways, so I really don't need to go out 5 or 6 days a week. I'll have one big errand day.

It is weird to shuffle my life around that way, though. The freedom of just getting in my car and going somewhere is... over. :shrug:

17. In 30 days, bussing and/or walking to work

My department is moving to a new building at the end of September, which is only 20 blocks or so from my apartment. Not only will I save a fortune in parking, but I'll also be doing more to reduce gas consumption.

I also live within walking distance of just about anything I could possibly need, and really don't have to drive anywhere:
* hardware store: 3 blocks
* food co-op: 4 blocks
* pizza/italian place: 4 blocks
* drug store: 6 blocks
* best mexican restaurant in town: 2 blocks
* cool irish pub: right around the corner

If I had to ditch my car, I could survive. Thankfully for me the car is a luxury, not a necessity. I am very fortunate that way.

18. I take care of my three year old grandson and we joyride a lot;

to the area parks, beaches, libraries, museums and of course the ice cream stores, lots of little activities to keep him (and me) amused. It's hard in the summer because it is so hot here and not comfortable to go out and play in the yard. Looks like those joyrides will be limited no. But I'm not complaining because it's not really a hardship...especially measured against what's going on in Mississippi and Louisiana.

I have an hour commute one way and public transportation isn't an option. I have a job I like, but I've started looking for something closer.
