Yeah, I know oil rigs and refineries were hit bad by Katrina -- but some how I can't shake the feeling of MAJOR PRICE GOUGING is occuring

for the past few months we've been given the excuse of high gas prices is due to:

1. lack of refining capacity
2. market speculation

yesterday - bush* agreed to open up oil reserves... Question: if there are not enough refineries and prices are "market driven" - then what good will the oil reserves do to lower prices?

15. I'm in Athens, GA. I filled up for just $2.99 before the prices went up

too much more at the local stations. Another Athens DUer reported $3.75/GAL in Athens at a Chevron on W. Broad St. My husband had to go to several stations to find gas. He called his ex wife in Atlanta
to warn her and she said it was crazy and expensive.

but she had been out of the house since 7:00 so who knows how bad its getting there. They also had lines of an hour or two and were limited to 10 gallons. This is an area that had tornadoes yesterday - some 40 homes were declared un-habitable.

luckily ... when they were expecting Katrina would hit - I gassed up and topped off too. Price was $2.99 at that time (last day for Discover 5% cash back on gasoline is today - so too late so I really paid $2.83 a gallon).

I only needed less than 5 gallons so it was not too much luckily.

Limit your trips, carpool is you can, stock up on items if you have a place to store them.

If you haven't gassed up yet, you'd really better do it ASAP because it will only go up in price!

Called my family in SC and told them about the shortages in Atlanta. My mom drives over 40 miles each way to her job---her boyfriend does the same. They already have to fill up 2x's per week just to make it. Unfortunately, she can't afford to move, and there are no jobs that would pay what she makes in her town. There is no public transportation. They're fucked.

I called them and my grandma today and told them to GET GAS NOW and DO NOT WAIT until tomorrow because it may be too late, or too expensive, or both.

I have a tiny little Mazda that gets about 30mpg highway. Today it took over $16 to put in 1/2 tank.

Hubby put in 1/2 tank yesterday and I topped it off today. Today at 1:30pm it was .15 higher than it was at 4pm yesterday. Cheapest gas in town, and there was a line of cars waiting to get in. Alot of people were filling up their car AND gas containers.

Never seen nothing like it.

According to denvergasprices.com, the price at Bradleys, a cheap gas place, was 2.63 at 10 am today, then by 2:30 it was 2.79 when I filled up and they were changing it to 2.89 as I left.

It's a collective action problem. I'm too muddy headed right now to give a lucid definition of these, but the canonical example is the Prisoner's Dilemma. In essence it's a situation where when everyone's looking after #1 they wind up more screwed than if they cooperated, but since the cooperation of others cannot be assumed they wind up looking after #1 anyway.

in Marietta, Kennesaw and Woodstock, GA yesterday afternoon. I was not going to sit in line and waste gas just to get gas. So this morning, I left the house at 5:45 a.m. and did not have to sit in any line. Of course, most of the gas stations were closed because they were out of gas. But I got lucky and found one station that was open and had gas. No lines, just three cars at the pumps. But of course, I had to pay $3 a gallon. I had a half tank already. But just to fill up it cost $26.

64. Perspective: I've lived in countries where gas was consistently

$5 or more per gallon. Places where that's the normal price, across the board. Americans don't know how good they have it -- particularly unfortunate because this insulated petrochemical ethnocentrism is key to the rise of atrocities like the Hummer and other superfluous SUVs. Heck, my Brittanic brethren would probably love to get hold of petrol as cheap as $5 a gallon.

I also ride a motorcycle so, although I balked at the $2.79 per gallon that I just paid tonight, the cost of my six-gallon-capacity tank is not so bad when you consider that it covers a week's worth of commuting. So, in short, I could thumb my nose at y'all by virtue of my being conveyed rapidly about the landscape on a vehicle far more economical than pretty much any car but the Prius (we pay in lots of other ways, not least of which is the tendency of oblivious car drivers to try to kill us at every turn) and because I am contemptuous of Amewicans whining abowt dere widdle wawwets being hit so hard by gas prices still the envy of much of the rest of the world.

But the reality is that I'm pretty disturbed by all of this because, apart from the immediate economic effect and the prospect of walking to and from work each day when and if the gas supply bottoms out (I love to walk, but my job's draining enough that the six or seven miles each way is hardly optimal, especially in the current heat), there's too likely to be Bad Stuff associated with this rapid price increase. People go crazy enough in this violent country without adding further provocation...and, again, I reference the heat still rather obvious in most parts of the country. And then there's the whole Bush-oil thing. It's not good. It sucks.

The only positive I can think of? Pretty simple: suffer, you Hummer-owning f***wits...

There's no valid reason that US cities and regional clusters of cities and towns couldn't have the same. The whole dismantling of the Los Angeles public transit system back at the start of the autombile's rise, to name one instance, is a fascinating piece of history that indicates beyond any doubt that the dependence of America on private car traffic was the wholly intentional result of a particularly cynical conspiracy.
