I seem to recall that in the past butter and margarine were about the same price. I usually went with marge because I'm single and a pound of butter would spoil on me, but margarine stayed good. I was at the store last week and they wanted $2.39 for a lb of butter but only 55 cents for the margarine. This is really odd because I've been able to find 1/2 gallons of milk for $1 lately. Why is making it into butter so expensive.

1. Oh those volatile food and energy components of CPI. |
|
Thank goodness the Department of Labor excludes food and energy from the most highly respected "Core CPI," oh driver of monetary policy and markets, Core CPI. I praise thee to the sky, my Core CPI.

2. FYI butter freezes nicely |

$2.39/pound is cheap! It's been over $3.00 here for years.

Maybe I'll freeze some butter if it comes back to a comparable price.

13. Butter has always cost more than margarine. |
|
I bake a lot, and as far back as I can remember butter has cost more. I only use butter now, but when I was growing up my mom bought margarine because it was cheaper.
Around here 2.39/lb would be a good deal on butter.
