Bob Kochersberger's Aug. 25 Point of View article "Conserving to cut demand" was nothing more than another left-wing diatribe about Americans having too much. Kochersberger seems to think that if Americans adopted all-things-Europe we would have enough oil. Anyone been to Europe lately and rented a car? Wasn't that fun?

The United States has always been about a freedom that enables its citizens to be as productive as they want to be. This free and productive citizenry has designed SUVs, bought SUVs and paid for the gas to put in them. Our freedom has enabled us to design alternatives that are more energy efficient and will continue to do so in the future. Our successful innovations have come about because we have seen the European way and we can do better.

I am constantly amazed reading articles from the people in academia questioning "who is making all the money." The price of oil is dictated by supply and demand. If demand goes up, then the people who produce the product stand to make more money. I do not see any op-ed pieces written when the demand for college education increases, resulting in increased tuition. It would seem like the income of academia rests on the backs of all of us, and that's a lousy situation.

Instead of adopting the mantra "the world is suffering, so why don't we suffer," we should continue to use our market-based resources to design market-demanded energy alternatives. Until that time, keep your Yugo away from my SUV.

but I don't see an actual POINT. Seems like he's just saying, "I want my SUV and you can't take it away."

I burst out laughing when Bush announced in the SOTU that he wanted to start work on developing a hydrogen car in this country...because it's a fucking joke coming from him.

8. Too bad Big Oil is on welfare

The government effectively subsidizes the oil industry in this country, and keeps our fuel prices artificially low.

If Big Oil had to compete on a truly level playing field, it would not fare as well as so-called "alternative" forms of energy.

Just like most conservative claptrap, this letter writer thinks that somehow the "marketplace" is completely fair, and is not influenced by power concentrated in the hands of a few key players. Nor does he realize that his SUV is subsidized by OUR tax money.

Once again, it's a case of "subsidies for us, free markets for them".

Gov't subsidies using MY tax dollars support SUV drivers gas addictions. Oil and gas companies should be cut off from all subsidies ASAP so idiots like this on can see what the market will really bear!

7. I heard something like this on talk radio recently

a caller was bragging about how much gas he burns (three vehicles the one with the best MPG got 9 yes NINE) and how damned proud he was of it. This is not new-I have heard a C-league RW buffoon (Glenn Beck)have long call ins about burning gas and how AMERICAN it is.

To this writer I wonder how the last few days are effecting his opinion. The market just changed asshole.

His college tuition analogy is illogical. Unlike college educations, petroleum is a finite resource, so it makes sense to exhort people to conserve it. Doing so even when prices are low is a wise idea, but when prices are exorbitant it becomes crucial.

Horseshit. The most efficient Chevy built and designed in the USA gets 32 MPG highway, ditto for Ford, and those are designed mainly from off-the-shelf components from a quarter century ago. Both Toyota and Honda have half a dozen or more models that eat their lunch on fuel economy, and some of those have four-wheel drive. Hybrid technology, in particular, is mainly a Japanese initiative, not an American one.
