Does anyone else want to do something besides give money??
Seriously. This just got really personal for me today and I don't want to sit around in my 'normal' life and do nothing. I just don't know what to do. I have a three day weekend and want to travel or do whatever I can. I just don't even know where to start.

1. yes. And i'm serious about this: do you know anyone who
works with the Goodyear or Fuji Blimp? Any Blimp executives? One of the main problems is communications, and I can get communications equipment donated and placed on the Blimp, if Goodyear or Fuji will go for it, and have the blimp hover over the area and allow for all the communications to start working....

Honest to god. My husband used to own a phone co. in Russia. He knows the radio folks, we just have to get a way to deploy the communications equipment, and the blimp could be stationary above the area.

2. Give Blood....
You would just get in the way....

Seriously there are almost 2 million displaced people down there....

They need to get food, water and the place cleared enough so they can restore power...

If you feel the need, wait a while, I am sure Habitat for Humanity will be pounding more than a few homes together....

If you want to do something, go on down to your local shelter...

Help there will release someone somewhere down the line to help in the blighted areas....

7. Yes... yes yes...
My company sent this:

Donate money to the charity of your choice who is currently helping with the Hurricane relief efforts.
Attached is a list of FEMA recommended charities or choose your own.

COMPANY will match the total money donated up to $1000.00. CEO will personally match up to $1000.00 as well.

The match dollars and cash donations will be donated to Habitat for Humanity.

You are free to contribute whatever dollar amount you see fit, yet we have created some rewarding incentives.

$15.00 = Casual wear for week 1 (Sept. 6th-9th)
$20.00 = Casual wear for week 2 (Sept. 12th-16th)
$20.00 = Casual wear for week 3 (Sept. 19th-23rd)
$20.00 = Casual wear for week 4 (Sept. 26th-30th)

(Casual Wear=Jeans, Flip-flops, T-shirts, baseball caps)

I replied with this:

Another suggestion, one easily forgotten - blood donations are needed as much as money. Here is a link to find and schedule appointments for blood drives: https://www.givelife.org/index.cfm?group=op

Maybe for those of us with tight pocketbooks you could offer a blood donation in lieu of some of the cash donation?

Regardless, I am going to the one next week and bringing as many co-workers as I can.

3. Yes, I have a TON of family in Louisiana.

None are in NOLA thankfully, but they are in rural LA. However we have gotten through to them -- a few have phone service and we've been using the grapevine telegraph to get word to everyone -- and they say, not yet, they don't need stuff right now, and they don't want to make the situation worse. There is very little gas there right now.

I am ITCHING to go and help them.

4. It's natural to want to do everything possible
But the best thing is to listen to the appeals and give what they ask for.

The best thing to give is money - I know it feels really wimpish just typing a credit card into a web-site, but that is probably going to do more than anything else.

8. Our local Rec Cross is offering a two day
boot camp to train volunteers. I saw it on KRON (San Fran) and the Red Cross chapter is in Santa clara. I'm calling tomorrow. Your Red Cross may offer something similar. I'm looking for one closer to me than Snnta clara.
