What are you thankful for?

Watching the news is just so heart-wrenching. It's hard to fathom the scope of the suffering and tragedy. It's doubly sad that many of the people baring the brunt of Katrina had so little to begin with.

My life is devoid of tragedy. I've had hardship and losses but on ordinary levels that everyone experiences. I'm thankful that I've suffered enough to build some character, but not enough to break my spirit.

I'm thankful that my family is just a phone call away and across town. I know they are safe. I know where they are.

I'm thankful that I live in a country where I don't fear medical bills. If I'm sick, I can go to the doctor.

My friends are wonderful and I cherish them; each one is a gift.

I live in a city of great beauty that feeds my soul. It's a safe place to be.

DU has made me thankful to be Canadian. My country still belongs to the people. I trust that my vote was counted. I truly appreciate all my DU friends who are trying to make the US into a good neighbour again.

I'm thankful for the little things that we take for granted; food in my cupboard, a warm bed, clean water and a working toilet.

4. I am thankful for my new fabulous job, my loving and smart SO, my dog,

my health, the roof over my head and the conveniences I have access to, clean water, art, music, my friends. My two feet so I can park my damn car and walk whenever I can. DEMOCRATIC UNDERGROUND! Cindy. I could go on. I'm heart broken by the suffering I am seeing. My life had been very unstable for some time with both of us unemployed. My job came just in time. But we never had days as bad as these. Never have I suffered such hardship as I see in the Gulf.

5. Thanks for posting this

Since my hospitalization, I've become more thankful every day for what I have.

I have my health back. I have good friends who I love, and who love me back. I have a safe place to live. I have a job (and a pretty good one, at that). I have some stability in my life.

I may not have everything I want, but I have everything I need.

for my husband and children, our extended families, a pantry and freezer full of food, fresh water, a comfortable home, and the luxury of having my mindset blown. I've done a lot of very hard thinking the last few days, and I'm starting to make some lifestyle changes.

13. That my cousin and his wife are safe and sound.

They live (or rather lived, they have no home now) in Biloxi, LA. They were up in New York for a visit when the storm hit.
Needless to say, they're now going to be living up here. There's nothing left for them there. His wife especially should be living in stable conditions since she's almost due.

My education.

My family.

My friends and lovers - we do make families of choice and they are indispensible.

Being gay - as an outsider I've been given a rare opportunity to see things from the outside. It radicalized me. Funny how wanting to bond with men made me so fierce about women's rights. But it did.

My daughter and my nephew.

The Goddess or the natural world - however you choose to view it. When things are really bad, it's enough.

17. My son started high school this week. A new school in a new town...

and he's turning over new leaves and there are new beginnings and possibilities.

Him growing into a good, decent, happy person is everything I could ever ask for. He's stumbled along the way, but it's all coming together now :).

I am thankful that in a couple weeks, my commute will be 50 miles shorter EVERY DAY!! :bounce:

And, like you... especially after the events of the week, I am also thankful for all that 'little' stuff I have taken for granted. :)

I'm thankful I have a job...granted, it's not much, but at least I have one.

I'm thankful for all the offers of assistance from around the world; it's just a shame our useless (P)resident blivet** won't Accept any of them!

If Bush, Cheney, Rice, et al would simply disappear, we could declare an early National Day of Thanksgiving.

But I don't want to end this post on a bitter note, so: I hope for a time not too far from now, when the refugees from New Orleans, Slidell, Gulfport, Biloxi, and adjacent communities have something to be thankful for as well. Then, we can ALL Be Thankful.

I am thankful for my home in a high-rise building that is self-governed, with a floor-to-ceiling view of the Boston skyline.

I'm thankful for a job at at company which I admire and a salary which allows me to have everything I need and almost everything that I want. (We're talking less than $40K, folks)

I'm thankful for the opportunities I have to make music here in Boston (um, did you see my user name?).

I'm thankful that my dear friend Sandra, who, 3 weeks ago moved to NOLA to attend law school at Tulane, safely found her way to Memphis, and will probably relocate back to Boston.

Life is good for me, but I am so sorry for those who are suffering under Chimp's regime...

There's been a lot to be angry and frustrated about this past week. So I can say with only a minimal amount of irony that we all need to take a deep breath and find our calm center.

Personally I'm grateful for my family and friends. For having a roof over my head and food in the fridge. For being able to enjoy music and make it myself (albeit poorly). For being able to spend the last 3.5 years living in your remarkable country, in a wonderful neighbourhood in a great city.

The list could go on and on. Probaly something worth spending several minutes everyday thinking about.

30. I just had this conversation with my fundie neighbot

While she was bitching about not being able to find gas tonight. She called me on her cell at 10 pm, knowing that I had to be up at 6am to take her kid and mine to school tomorrow. \
I told her that I was thankful that Katrina missed us and that my family was healthy and had a roof over our heads. She whined about waiting in line to gas up her hubby's car for his long commute.

She expected sympathy and was shocked when I didn't give it to her. I just said that we were lucky we weren't hurting like those in Katrina's path and that she should be greatful she got gas and had a roof over her head. She got mad at me for being so negative. I asked her if she had watched any tv today, of course, she hadn't, I told her that I had seen bodies floating, babies dying, dead women covered by a blanket and shoved towards the exit in the NO Convention center so I wasn't in a real upbeat mood. She said, I don't watch that stuff. I need to focus on the positive. No wonder this country is in so much trouble. She wanted me to tell her where to find gas but didn't want to talk about the reason why gas is hard to find.
