4. Sorry to disagree w/you--but a large part of DU also

has a problem.

They think it's ok to deny something is racist, when they in fact have no idea what racism looks or feels like.

They think it's alright to make presumptive comments about human beings characters, just because they saw them doing something on television.

They also think it's cool to call people of color names like stupid, ignorant, incompetent, lazy and thugs on an open forum that has members that also share this ethnicity.

So, sadly it isn't just our govt. It is also the people many of us have thought of as comrades in arms, as solace from the political storm, who are saying things many of us just don't expect to hear or see on a 'alleged' democratic forum.

What's worse is, after they are done with all of this, they will nominate it for the main page.

6. I won't nominate anything like that. I see the racism and

I am a white person who is surrounded by white people who say I am crazy for seeing the racism and saying something about it. I see it. I'm ashamed to be white with the way things are being reported. If a starving white person is shown (rare) with food, water, or medical supplies, the news media say "many people are salvaging what they can to survive and to take much needed medical supplies, food, and water to dying people." When black people do the exact same thing, they say it's looting. Preposterous. Anyone who doesn't see it needs to open their eyes. It's blatant racist reporting.

7. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to upset

I've seen some incredibly stupid and naive posts here too that leave me scratching my head and wondering.
I truly don't think the majority of people here are that way. I know I'm not.
My statement was merely what I've gathered from people in my own life who are shocked, awed and rendered impotent by what is going on in New Orleans. I think most people are in a state of exaspiration and there is literally nothing any of us can do except watch the horror.

If anything, I do beleive the elephant in the living room is awake and stomping around. There needs to be a national dialogue after this has settled.
Again, didn't mean to offend and I hope this post makes sense. I'm getting tired and not expressing myself as I'd like. :)

9. My Friend Phyllis gives me a pass because I grew up in

an all white place 20 miles north of Detroit. She figures that I have learned racism that pops up sometimes, and she needs to call me on it. I get pissed, and deny it, and she laughs and gives me hugs. Then we go for coffee. I've been lucky in my life with the people who've chosen to be my friend.

control over the situation. Imagine if those millions of dollars were actually spent renting Greyhounds, boats, planes, medicine, food, water, and other needed items and then actually taken down there to help those people. Woudn't that be great if they actually bothered to do that to help those people?
