Seriously, try not to let it get you down. (I know this is easier said than done.) We're running through an extreme situation at the moment, and during extreme situations, things get more heated than usual. People pop-off for no reason because of stress. I've personally had to step away from the keyboard several times today.

As for the specifics, you were jumped for making an anti-WalMart comment? That's bizarre. Some I have noted are taking umbrage at snipes at WalMart because of a genuine concern for those who have lost their jobs and are misplacing their outrage. Again, try not to let it bother you too much.

4. It has been just nuts here over the past few days.

Nerves are pretty raw and we've had an unusually high number of new people, so I think the snark factor is riding high.

Of course, I will tell you that I still get crap from people occasionally (as a low-ish poster)--I've been here for years, and if there's a secret codeword, I didn't get the memo either!

6. Welcome to DU.

Everyone's feelings are a little raw, but GD can still be scary at the best of times. This is NOT the best of times. Occasionally, someone will say something that REALLY hurts my feelings, but not often enough to make me quit. Boards like DU are really hard on sensitive souls sometimes.

One thing to remember about DU is that it's like a small city. There are some real saints and some real assholes, but most of us are in the middle somewhere. I've snarked off at some people who maybe didn't deserve it and some people who did. :shrug:

If you can develop a thick skin, it makes it a bit easier. That's hard for the sensitive types, though (me, for example :D).

7. I don't think post count has anything to do with it

You're just as likely to get shat upon if you have 5000 posts as if you have 200. Sometimes people are just snarky or even downright rude with little or no provocation. Rather than a high post count you need a thick skin and/or the ability to "pooh pooh" mean people. You always have the option of putting them on ignore or,if they are really nasty, hitting the "alert" button at the bottom of their post.

8. Thanks yall. Good to know. I never got this stuff before and was shocked

at the response. Just weird, since several people posted similar sentiments and didn't get slammed (they all haved 1000+ post counts and stars, I think.)

And the reason I don't have a star (in case anyone is wondering, heh heh) is because I'm a grad student, broke, and give all my charity money to Red Cross or Oxfam and animal rescues...I'm going to try to come up with a little for DU next month though, I swear.

I've almost got 5000 posts or so, and I still get flamed occasionally. It happens way more in GD than in the Lounge.

It's a running joke to pop into GD, then run back to the Lounge and ask for a hug or a bath.

I think it's cause you weren't posting in the Lounge. Post counts don't matter. This works. Always come here to make friends and then if you are feeling feisty and ready for some serious flaming, go to the other places. I'm serious. The Lounge has much better atmosphere and way less hateful people. We might get a little pissed over here every now and again, but the flame wars hardly ever happen here. As a matter of fact, I haven't seen any real nasty ones here in the Lounge, yet. I landed here one night a few years ago and haven't left except for a few excursions over to GD when I'm beyond pissed and don't want to bring the mood down in the Lounge. I know that bunch of rough riders over in GD probably disagree with me, so it lets me vent when I'm to that level of pissed. When I have had enough, I practice the ignore function and then come back here to lick my wounds. Otherwise, I like staying in the Lounge to mingle. The people that frequent the Lounge are tops on my list. Not hateful. We aren't snarky here, we like to be sarcastic and joke a lot to lighten the extreme mood when things are really bad.

BTW, I'd like to extend a hearty welcome.

in the state and issue forums as well. Or does it take a star to post in a DU group?
Plus I have seen a fair amount of flames flying in the lounge as well. I also see more GD like topics here than in the past. GD is more like LBN now too since they go through phases, discussing the current hot news topic rather than general issues. (it was all Schiavo, and all Pope, and now it is all Katrina) That is one of the reasons I never read LBN. I do not care to be on the cutting edge. If it is interesting or important it will be posted soon enough in GD or the lounge.
