Poll question: How long does it take for your computer to boot?
From the end of post to active and ready window

I just tested my new rig, 11 seconds. And it's not even optimized yet :D

1. Since both my Macs run

24 / 7 there has never beeen the need to reboot.

Only time I restart is when I upgrade System Software.

I run an iMac and an eMac.

15. That's nice
I don't like leaving a computer on for no good reason at all, we waste enough energy as it is.

2. Ah, I missed the part about "end of post"
So my vote (which now says 21-30) is probably more in the 11-20 range.

4. Maybe I'm not understanding the question...
"From the end of post to active and ready window"
Does this mean from powered off to completed desktop and ready, or are you talking about just here on DU. The time it takes my comp. to bring up a posting window?

I know, I know...I just got up so I may need to have some more coffee before I post. :hi:

7. The time it takes me to nuke up and eat a "Lean Cuisine(tm)"
(Sorry for the product placement)

I can't look at a clock long enough. It repeats every
12 hours, youknow.

8. My work computer takes about 2-3 minutes. And it is a decent one.
I have no idea what these people do to these machines.

9. Probably has way to many programs starting (and running)...
..in the background. You might want to change the start-up programs.

11. n00b question here: How do you optimise it to boot faster?
I only have my AV and firewall running at startup...

13. go to "start" ...."run"...type in "msconfig"...
When the "System configuration screen" pops up, click on the far right tab "start-up" ...click on "disable all" (don't worry..your firewall will turn itself back on at start-up)..click "apply".."OK"

start computer again and when the box pops up click "Don't show screen again... That's it.

14. Well, I like to do it with a bit more accuracy than that
but yes, that would certainly work.

20. Oh. I've done all that, but certain NAV crap needs to go on start up
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 01:08 PM by miss_kitty
or it doesn't do this or that like it's suppose to. I suppose the solution would be to ditch NAV in favour of something less clunky and more effective. :D

Thanks!

On Edit: and I am in the 11-20 sec category. :)

16. A lot longer than that
But I remember my neighbor's old 80/88--it took so long to boot up that our game was to all try and say "now!" at the exact moment the thing lit up and began to access the DOS disk. Plus it had Decathlon and Zork.
