I'll see if I can find it.

edit: Here it is, over in Demopedia. It's a comprehensive list of all the acronyms and lingo used here at DU. We really do have our own special language.

6. The important ones are
n/t - no text. Don't bother checking the message because the subject line is the message.

eom - end of message

wtf - what the fuck? Usually used either because it's easier to type or because some people feel awkward saying "fuck".

IMO - very important. In My Opinion. Or IMHO - In My Humble Opinion. Shorthand for letting people know that although you think this, others might think differently. But it can also be used sarcastically.

Rarely seen anymore is YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary - pretty much the same as IMO but more explicit.

With that, you're good to go! IMO.

And welcome Holly! I promise we'll be gentle :)

Khash.

18. Not technically an acronym - more a piece of local slang
khashka - it means a really really irritating fly. The sort that buzzes round one all of the time, occasionally giving one bites which hurt like billio (and probably carry infectious diseases too). :P

(I hope that you realise that this is just a joke :loveya: lots and lots and lots and lots and lots.)

7. IIRC-- if I recall correctly (a personal fave)
the asterisk * instead of or near Bush's name connotes the fact that he was an appointed, not elected. President, thus an exception to be noted when US Presidents are listed.

Example: " * is an idiot"

*= Asshat in Chief

8. I have to confess...when I first started reading DU I was convinced the *
was inspired by Vonnegut's drawing of, er, a "body part," shall we say, in Breakfast of Champions.

10. the tinfoil hat in me said it was code so a Fed search of insulting Bush
postings would be less traceable.

Oy.

If they're tracking insulting bush postings: GET OFF THE NET AND GET TO NOLA. I'm paying your salary!

12. Ha ha, and amen.
I wrote a DOOZY of a rant on my online diary yesterday. If they are spending time looking at it they're wasting their time. They could get to NOLA and 1. hear pretty much the same rant from anybody there and 2. actually help people while they're they're at it.

17. haha...

no inordinate teasing meant toward the OP, but I thought an "anacronym" might be the gratuitous full-spelling-out of something that is usually expressed as an acronym...as in "I think I'm going to go diving with my Self-contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus next Saturday..." or "the air traffic controller checked her radio detecting and ranging equipment..."

:P
