Am I the only one tempted to take a "reality break"?
Things are becoming too overwhelming right now with NOLA, the ongoing mess our nation has become plus personal issues. I'm sorely tempted to take a break from reality, selfish though it may be. I just don't know if I can bring myself to do it. :dilemma:

1. Yes do it
If you screw yourself up to the point where you can no longer function, what purpose can that possibly serve?

You must look after yourself too, for if you fail to do that how can you help others?

2. nope
Took one today myself; taking one tomorrow, too. It's overwhelming right now what's going on, and I know this isn't going away soon.

We're going camping in a couple weeks before the weather gets really cold; that'll be a nice break from the chaos now..

3. Isn't that what lounges are for?
My tale of woe: I am off to bed when lo and behold there on my comforter was a present from one of my dogs! GREAT CEASAR'S GHOST!
What did I do to deserve this? But then I thought: At least I have a bed, a belly full o' food, and 2 dogs who love me enough to puke on my bed....serves me right fer lettin them lick the plate, well thats what my kid would say if she were here, (she gets a free hug tomorrow for that) Tomorrow will be another day, I have electricity and I can do laundry.... maybe.... just maybe, life ain't so bad for me afterall...
Hang in there Buffy.
Lets try this again....night all. :grouphug:

4. I've been there
Only I didn't discover the "gift" by sight, but rather by touch after I'd gotten into bed. Mr. Kitty had hurled on the comforter and I put my hand right in it. x(

Thanks for the support and hug chknltl :pals:

5. Go for it...things have gone crazy
I spent most of yesterday digging around in my yard and hanging out with the kids, no tvs or net. I'm getting ready to do the same thing today. Take a break if you need one. Sanity is underrated. ;)

7. I'm almost nuts myself. Can't watch TV or listen to the radio.
This is beginning to look like clinical depression. I've got to pull myself together to take care of my five-year-old grandson this afternoon and into tomorrow.

Let's get it together. One of the ways is by signing off this board, much as I regret to say that.

Later, everybody. Peace.

8. No you are not
I think that all of us are here at DU because we care so deeply. It is overwhelming at times like this to witness such needless suffering and to see the gross incompetence in Washington. We all need to take some time to turn things off for our own sanity. Take a break and don't feel guilty.

9. Go, regroup.......
Sometimes you just need to take a break from things.

It's not selfish, it's normal. :)

10. I could be tempted
What does this break involve? You dressed up as cat-woman and me as Batman? (Admittedly I would work better as an aging Robin, but this is a "reality" break). That sounds like a late summer night's dream.

Or are you talking about a news black-out? Camping trip? A trip with mescaline?

I probably live in a permanent reality break. I certainly do not follow the events of NOLA as much as some around here (and some around here did not have a choice and have more personal connections). If I had cable TV I probably would watch more music videos and Gunsmoke re-runs than I would CNN and such. Too much news that is so bad combined with so little ability to do anything about it is not a good combination. A person has got to know their limitations.

11. Hey I am going out to garden and take the pooch for a walk
I will be cutting some shrubbery into weird shapes, because I can. In a few weeks I'll be taking them out.

Take that break, because you can.

12. Of course you're not. You should do it -
everyone needs a break to regroup now and then.

My husband and I went out to dinner on Friday night. We've been overwhelmed with all that's been going on;I was virtually glued to the computer and the TV and all the news. My husband was immersed in putting together a plan to volunteer in Houston or wherever helping hands are needed.

It was a belated anniversary dinner. I wasn't sure if we should even go; it almost seemed immoral. Several good friends reminded me, however, that the cook at the restaurant still needs to pay living expenses, the waitstaff still need their tips, and that social fellowship is good for the soul.

As coincidence would have it, we ran into our pastor and his wife at the restaurant, and the talk we had with them over how best we can help with hurricane relief was enormously helpful to both of us.

14. Well, personally ...
I have found myself feeling the same way, and I've decided that I'm not allowed to watch any news shows for at least a week. The only exception is the weather report, since I live in Florida and need to know if (God forbid) any more storms are headed my way.

15. I'm doing it
I'm not watching or reading any news. Here at DU I'm not clicking on any threads that are obviously about politics/news/flamebait/etc. I rented two DVDs tonight and I've just begun the second one (pure escapist horror). I may read a novel if the mood strikes. In the morning I'll head to the health club for some exercise. I'll return fully to the world when I'm ready.

16. Yup.
I'm tired of being angry. I've been livid since November, and thought that I couldn't get more angry. Video games are a refuge..

17. It's healthy to do so--
unfortunately the mess will still be there when you return to it (sigh)...

We need you at your best. Do what you need to do to feel better. I took a bit of a break today...
