I've posted a few rants over the last year of a person named Pee Wee. To give you a little background, Pee Wee is a man, a former friend, who was destructive in my life.
Pee Wee was a narcissist. And despite my speaking up, getting Pee Wee in trouble, and getting away from Pee Wee, I still needed answers from him: "why."
So I reconnected with Pee Wee. He apologized. He told me precisely what I wanted to hear. See, Pee Wee was exceptionally skilled at reading other people and manipulating them.
But after a while, I began to do some research and realized that Pee Wee's apology felt a bit water-thin. He said the words, but I suspected that he truly, deep down, didn't understand the purpose of his apology. They were just words designed to get me to respect him again. Narcissists must maintain a false image or else they suffer.
So later I pressed him. "When you apologized to me, what did you apologize for?" He simply could not answer. He stammered. He tossed out some platitudes, but he couldn't answer.
Like Pee Wee, George Bush is a narcissist. When he pulled Mayor Ray Nagin aside, allowed him to shower in AF1, then told him that he thought "things could have been better," my first thought was to contact the Mayor and ask him to press Bush on precisely HOW things "could have been better." Make the man dance a little, as the Mafia says.
Words. They were just words. And for that reason, my experience with Pee Wee permits me to see through much of Bush's bullshit. I wish the Mayor, also, could see the same bullshit I saw in Bush's vacuous, condescending assurances.
Mr. Nagin, you're being used. Just like Pee Wee used me.
