1. Tank of gas today = $61.28.
Jeep Grand Cherokee V8. I filled up on Sunday night before the hurricane and paid $2.41 a gallon for regular. Today a gallon of regular is $3.49.

3. Holy crap, that's $0.45 more than we paid per gallon.
You have my sympathies, you horse-tower, you. ;) Any plans for a different car?

5. I'm thinking about it, but if we get rid of the SUV...
We won't have anything to pull the horse trailer or get bales of hay. We'd only end up paying someone else to deliver the hay (and pay their gas), and God forbid if we ever had to evacuate with the horses we'd have no way of pulling the trailer. It sucks, that's for sure. At this point I don't even need a hybrid, I would be so happy to just have a regular car!

When people say horses are expensive, they aren't friggin' kidding! :P

9. One of my favorite authors has made me want an entirely different
lifestyle. After reading Rita Mae Brown's "Mrs Murphy Mysteries" I want a small farm - just enough for a couple of horses and growing some of what they need. :eyes: Pipe dream.

And she makes it clear that owning horses isn't a cheap way to live. What kind of place do you have?

20. Well, our horses are spoiled ;)

So it is definitely possible to have a farm for less money. We went hog-wild building a new barn with lots of goodies and such, but really a shed-row style barn would be fine, and you can certainly grow the hay is you've got a few extra acres. But I have to say - the freedom that comes from being able to own your own piece of land is amazing. I read a book when I was younger called "Five Acres and Independence" and ever since I've been all hot for a farm. It's comforting to know that you'll akways have enough land to grow most of what you need.

We were so lucky finding our place. It had been on the market for an entire year after an illness forced the old owners to sell. Three deals fell through for freak accidents when we made an offer. It was a practically new 8-year-old Colonial house (4 bed, 3.5 bath) with in-ground pool plus the land - it was super cheap as the sellers were very anxious to sell. There was a crappy barn on the property which we tore down and built new, and we replaced all the old fencing they had, too. We planted a lot of vegetables (and fertilize them with the horse poop - sounds gross but they are the BEST veggies you'll find!), and several rows of lavender.

It is so not a pipe dream though - if you want it, you should definitely go for it!

4. Down to $2.79 in St. Paul, MN today
from a high of $2.99 at the cheap station on Friday. I paid over $40 to fill my tank for the first time on Friday. Normally I can do it for under $30.

I have gone 72 miles since filling up. If I can keep my gas usage to fewer than 80 miles a week, I can go a month before filling up.

11. I drive 72 miles per day, five days per week.
I'm seriously thinking of taking the commuter bus on days Mrs. V. doesn't commute in with me. Only problem is I don't really know how to figure out if it's cost effective. It would be about $75 per month. I already pay $190 per month for parking in town.

I'm too tipsy to try to figure this out now. :eyes:

I hope you are able to keep it down, L-W.

23. From A Bus Rider
For one thing, you wouldn't have to pay so much for parking-depending on how many days a month your wife doesn't drive with you. What's the daily rate where you park? Multiply that by the estimated number of days you need it.

Ask your transit company. Companies can get tax breaks for paying for employee transit expenses. You could get free passes through this.

Commuter Check is just one of many programs-national

Rideshare may be another.
