Who else here absolutely loves Washington D.C.?

Not to belittle any other city in our fine nation, but I'd have to say that Washington D.C. is by far my favorite city in the world. Everything about it...its great. The blending of so many cultures, the history, the awe-inspiring architecture...I love it all. People watching on the Metro, sitting in a cybercafe in DuPont, reading the Post at a sidewalk cafe in Foggy Bottom, lunch on the Mall, shopping down in Crystal City in northern VA...I miss it all. If all goes well, hopefully I'll get a chance to move down there after college. :)

I went back there in April this year, and the Capitol looked like a bunkered fort. That was kind of saddening.

Grew up there, and left after college, that was enough time there. Miss reading the paper version of the WaPo, riding the bike trails, activities on the Mall, the Smithsonian, the concerts in the park, Wolf Trap ampitheatre, Kennedy Center....

Have been back twice since 9/11 but it's not the same place I am used to. Kind of sad, had many happy memories there....

But it's got its good points too...the museums, Rock Creek Park, the Washington Cathedral, some decent music. Just take metro to get to everything, and don't go anywhere during rush hour! :D

10. Home away from Home -

It provides much stress relief from the monotony of my Ohio life. SO much more there to do - the public transportation there kicks the ass of many major cities (especially Cleveland's shitty Rapid, which only benefits East siders). Every time I go there, I find something new that I hadn't found before. I could spend hours in those museums and never get sick of them. It's now tradition to visit the National Art Gallery and look at "#1" (Pollock), "The Annunciation" (Van Eyck) and the only Da Vinci in America, "Ginevra de' Benci". Not even the stain that occupies the Blight House can ruin a DC trip for me. Best of all, I have a sister that lives in Silver Spring, MD, so no hotel costs and Metro/Metrobus access wherever!

I'd live down there, but it's simply too damned expensive now and I don't have the type of career that makes money or is sustainable (but then again, isn't that MOST careers nowadays?). It used to be, but thanks to corporate uber-greed, it isn't anymore. Maybe I need to get one.

I saw so many great shows there. I miss the Mall and the museums, the Metro, the people, Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, The Brickskellar, Rock Creek Park, Capitol Hill.

So much to see and do there; I cannot wait for my children to get older so I can take them to visit.

25. A DC Metro story.

I was riding the Metro through DC one day and a young woman (attired in business clothes) asked me if I used to live in Buffalo. I was wearing my Shakespeare in the Park t-shirt. When I told her yes, I had lived in Buffalo and liked it very much, she mentioned how much she loved Buffalo.

Which is a roundabout way of saying I love both cities, and I will never get tired of DC. People might justifiably think of this town as political, cutthroat, and so forth, but look beyond the stereotypes to the people who live here. I ride into DC six days out of seven and never tire of the architecture, the tourists, the people watching, all the attractions of the city. Sometimes I can't believe my luck.

Yes, it's hellishly expensive, and yes, the White House might blockade the street and prevent you from taking the most direct route to a lecture, exhibit, or protest. But I love it here.

I love the majesty of the monuments, the museums, Arlington National Cemetery, Union Station, the "Old Tooth," the Capitol. I also love the White House and am just SICK that this bastard is squatting in our beautiful old house.

DC doesn't seem the same to me now that the Nazis are running the show. Bring compassion and reason back to our beautiful capital city, PLEASE!!

from Aug 2000 to Jul 2002, and I spent more time in DC than I did in Columbia or on Ft Meade. :P

Its a great place if you have a very well paying job. There are parts of D.C. (back then at least) that I would no dare go.
I enjoyed the place but now I live in a very rural area with no other people or houses that I can see. I prefer the rural lifestyle now.

27. I'll weigh in on DC

My sister lives in Silver Spring and I used to date a woman who lived on Wisconsin Avenue just up the hill from a Bread and Circus and an Austin Grill.

I too love the blend of cultures, the multitude of languages spoken, and the like. And, of course, all the history of this country - the Smithsonian, the National Archives, The Mall...

Gotta love a Wizards game in DC!

It's too bad Bush sits at the helm. Puts a big damper on an otherwise wonderful city and area.
