"Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream"
"Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream" (song) by Ed McCurdy, performed by Pete Seeger.

audio excerpt:

Folk singer Pete Seeger turned 85 on May 3, 2004.

For decades he's been performing songs dealing with civil rights, labor, and peace (plus love songs and other topics, too).

I just want to provide a taste of one of the songs he recorded, which is available on the compilation album "If I Had Hammer: Songs of Hope & Struggle." The song was written in 1950 and recorded in 1956.

Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream lyrics and music by Ed McCurdy, 1950
excerpt:

Last night I had the strangest dream
I never dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war

I dreamed I saw a mighy room
The room was full of men
And the paper they were signing said
They'd never fight again

And when the paper was all signed
And a million copies made
They all joined hands and bowed their heads
And grateful prayers were prayed

And the people in the streets below
Were dancing round and round
And swords and guns and uniforms
Were scattered on the ground

1. Sorry, this is what popped into my mind
Last night I had the strangest dream
I sailed away to China, in a little rowboat to find ya
And you said you had to get your laundry clean
Didn't want no one to hold you, what does that mean? And you said...

Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
Nobody gonna slow me down, oh no
I've got to keep on moving
Ain't nothing gonna break my stride
I'm running and I won't touch ground, oh no
I've got to keep on moving

You're on the road and now you pray it'll last
The road behind was rocky
But now you're feeling cocky
You look at me and you see your past
Is that the reason why you're running so fast? And you said...

Never let another girl like you work me over
Never let another girl like you drag me under
If I meet another girl like you I will tell him
Never want another girl like you have to say - hey!

Ahh, Matthew Wilder... where did you go...

3. I had a totally different song in my head, by The Postal Service...
Sleeping In

Last night I had the strangest dream
Where everything was exactly how it seemed
Where there was never any mystery
Of who killed John F. Kennedy, it was
Just a man with something to prove
Slightly bored and severely confused, he
Steadied his rifle with the target in the center
And became famous on that day in November

Don't wake me I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me I plan on sleeping in

Again last night I had that strange, strange dream
Where everything was exactly how it seemed
Weren't concerns about the world getting warmer
People thought that they were just being rewarded
For treating others as they'd like to be treated
Obeying stop signs, and curing diseases,
For mailing letters with the address of the sender,
Now we can swim any day in November

Now we can swim any day in November

Don't wake me I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me I plan on sleeping in
Don't wake me I plan on sleeping in

Kind of a trippy song, and kind of stupid, but that's what I thought of. I like the lyrics of your song better, and the message, though I've never heard it.

6. I love the Kingston Trio's version
Stewart's little banjo solo and the three male parts booming out together served that one well. Time To Think - one of the really great folk albums. Also contains Stewart's "Song For A Friend", written 11/23/63.

7. Thanks for pointing that out.
I had the 4 cd-set, "The Kingston Trio: The Capitol Years" sitting unopened in shrink-wrap on a shelf, and I opened it and played that song after seeing your post.

8. That's a pretty good set
there's some "lost tracks" on there that are of interest. I was/am a big fan of KT - a complete set of vinyl - and of Stewart's post-trio career. An overlooked writer, IMO.
