Tropical Storm 16 has a name and is coming to Florida
Let's hope she's like Katrina when she hit the Florida coast which was really just alot of wind & rain but nothing seriously damaging.

Oh, her name is Ophelia

4. The National Hurricane Center
They pick them a year in advance.

Here's a neat FAQ on the history of naming storms:

6. They also retire the names of especially destructive ones
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 12:32 PM by LynneSin
There will never be another Hurricane Katrina. She'll be retired immediately

Edit to include the list of names that have been retired. It's updated to 2004 so Katrina isn't on there yet!

8. Hazel - 1954
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 12:59 PM by supernova
is the one everyone remembers around here.... until Floyd in 1999. Hazel was wind and lightening. My sister was six at the time and she remembers the trees being horizonal.

Floyd everyone will remember not so much for the stormy condtions but for all the flooding, just like in the Gulf now.

She cut through florida starting in the gulf and heading through the Altantic and for some reason she decided to come back again and came in through NYC and stopped in Pennsylvania for a couple of days.
