1. I'm a naturalized US Citizen. Having a passport is easier...

...than carrying around my naturalization papers should the need arise. Plus, if I ever get the chance to leave the country on vacation, it's one less thing to worry about.

Before that I was on my parents' passport, but I went on a school-trip to France and so had to get one then.

I'd guess that the majority of Brits have them - but then when a day-trip to Paris (for example) is logistically feasible, it does change one's view of foreign travel.

British passports last for 10 years, or for 5 years under the age of 16 (with free extention for the other 5 years with new photos).

20. If the child is under 15, I believe,

they travel on the adult's passport. Adult passports are good for 10 years.

However, and I learned this from a Customs person on my way into Toronto one year, you can still travel on an expired passport.

10. I have a passport AND an overseas Pakistani national ID card

Though I'm not Pakistani, my husband is, and he got us these cards a few years ago to facilitate entry into Pakistan. Supposedly this will eliminate the need for a visa. Because I haven't gotten to go to Pakistan yet, this card remains, sadly, unused.

I've had one since age 20, and keep it current. It's the most "legal" form of identification you can have in the US, IMHO.

My wife is a naturalized citizen and has her passport. About 2 weeks ago, I started the process for my 2-year-10-month-old to have his own passport.

I don't *know* that I'll need it, but, I'll admit, I'm worried and I'd rather have it and not need it than vice versa. Even with that, though, I don't know if I started early enough. :cry:

and have wanted to leave the states since the eighties. Too flippin' poor to leave. I had already imagined fenced-in populations. My brother and I want to live in your area. :cry:

At one time, Portugal looked the easiest to immigrate to without having loads of cash.

The only other option was to find a mate in another country, gay or straight. x(

Last couple of times my wife and I went to Canada, the Canadian border guards going in were terrific; polite, friendly and helpful. The American border guards coming back were John Ashcroft's wet dream: rude, abrupt, bordering hostile. Just like Germany, 1936, you must have your papers in order............

32. It's not cheap to get a passport either

With all the fees, it's $97 for one and that doesn't include the photos you need. If you need expedited service, quicker that six weeks, it's even more.

A US one, and an Italian/EU one... thanks to a Sicilian great grandfather who was (unfortunately) too illiterate to become a US citizen.

I'm now a recovering SUV owner. Really isn't all that bad, although I still have my moments.

And soon everyone will have to have a passport to walk over into Mexico and return. I have mine, but a lot of people in town are complaining about the cost of having to get one, even though they have 2-3 years to save up for it before it becomes mandatory. I think everyone should have one! I got mine for a trip to Canada in November 2001 -- two months after 9/11. It wasn't necessary, but seemed like a good idea.
