I'm watching a 9-11 documentary, but it's about the people who were on flights coming into the US who had to land in Canada and what happened to them there.

Halifax - ends up with 23,000 people
Vancouver - ends up with 160+ airliners

Plus the other airports that got planes.

But listen to this - they especially covered Nova Scotia, and, all those planes show up in the course of a couple hours, the communities are suddenly flooded with far more people than their hotels can handle, and EVERY FUCKING CITY THAT HAD PEOPLE LAND managed, within less than a day, to have enough cots, blankets, food for all of them; managed to find people to take them into their homes; managed to turn their schools in hotels; the communities all rallied together, somewhat spontaneously, and showered the people with toothbrushes, toothpaste, blankets, and, as I said before, shitloads and shitloads of food. People took people into their homes to stay, or at least to shower; people offered their phones; and hundreds of volunteers spontaneously showed up to help serve food, distribute stuff, watch over the people, make coffee, and basically were in the schools constantly helping.

I am flabbergasted. The planes landed, some of them took maybe 15 hours or so to get all the passengers cleared for security, and EVERY FUCKING COMMUNITY, by the time those people were cleared, had set up shelters already, and had buses ready to bus them all over the fuckin' place.

And what do the republicans do after a major hurricane? Tell volunteers to go fuck themselves; tell refugees to go fuck themselves; tell the city of New ORleans to go fuck itself; and they take a fucking week to manage to put together some half-assed inhuman slop-job of getting people into new refugee centers, and then they go on TV and badmouth the refugees and say bullshit like "Hey, they're used to squalor!" or "Hey! They should have left sooner!"

And this isn't to say Canadians are better than Americans - I think the American response to New Orleans and Katrina would have equalled the response of the Canadians, except that REPUBLICANS - not "our government", but SPECIFICALLY Republicans - made it, for all intents and purposes, illegal to help.
