Why is it when someone comes to DU and says they are a convert from the freeper ways, some people automatically assume the person is a troll and pile on the newbie...can't we be more kind, and perhaps wait until they actually show some trollish behavior before ripping them a new ass canal?

1. I'd rather people just not pile on newbies, regardless of the past

Use that little "alert" link in the lower left corner of the post, if you think the person's a troll. If you must, PM somebody else about it - but watching people with under 100 posts get piled on was one of my biggest pet peeves during my moderating days.

Attacking a troll only encourages them to come back, IMO.

37. I mostly agree with you, but sometimes they ask for the pile on.

Take for example, coming into the lounge and calling long time posters nasty names - of course people are going to come to that person's defense. It just happens.

I don't take post counts into consideration unless a person come in and acts rude from the get go.

I always couch things in terms of how I behaved as a newbie, I suppose. I took the time to get to know the layout of the land and who was who - I didn't come in shooting from the hip. And, anyone who does that is somewhat suspect in my book.

I mean, God, if it really were a a troll, would they be fucking ADVERTISING themselves as an ex-freeper? Let's face it, any user, regardless of their professed beliefs, might be a troll - it is, in fact, quite easy to lie on the internet. I mean, YOU could be a troll. Actually, those kind of posts make me more interested in the self-appointed persecutee/persecutors.

There were two posts in GD today that spurred this post

one was a "confessions of a former freeper" post...Most of the replies were kind and welcoming

the other post was a "I can't believe you fell for that BS" post

As yet, the newbie has not ordered a pizza, so I have no reason to believe he is insincere.

I was kinda shy in the beginning. I guess it took about 6 months before I actually starting saying bite me to people but I did.
I'm enjoying DU now ... more than ever.
