I have been coming to the Lounge more and more to escape. The national feeling of sadness is so heavy, and shame for what happened in New Orleans. I can't watch the news anymore.

It's like, certain sections of the press like to paint a picture of Britain that is going to hell in a hand basket. But then they have always done that, it is just the reason for thinking so that changes. These parts of the press like to say that Britons are "living in fear" since the terrorist attacks in London, but I don't recognise that at all. Everybody I know is just living their lives like they did before, relatively unconcerned.

We are very shocked about what happened in New Orleans. Not the disaster itself, which was natural and expected, albeit worse than predicted. Rather the response to it, or lack thereof. It is quite clear that if it were not for the outrage, the US government would have been quite content to let those poor people rot and die. For a moment we saw what laissez-faire economics and small government really meant, and it is very ugly.

You are right, they would have left the people there to die.

The head of FEMA lied and said they didn't know the people were there, everybody else did.

This isn't going away, and I fear things are going to get worse.

I am so thankful for all the countries that want to help, I am feeling very humble. Please know so many of us here are so different from the Bush and his kind, we are just in shock right now.
