Shameless plug for my friend's movie: "Green Street Hooligans"

My best friend from college, Josh Shelov, was one of the writers on the new film "Green Street Hooligans," which opens today in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. It stars Elijah Wood. This is a really big deal for my friend, who has worked a long time trying to become a screenwriter.

I have not seen the film yet, so I can't tell you what to expect. I am told that it is *very* violent, so leave the kids at home. Some recognition:

* Winner of the 2005 SXSW Jury and Audience Awards for Best Narrative Feature
* Best of Festival Feature Jury Award, Malibu International Film Festival 2005
* Official Selection, 2005 Tribeca Film Festival
* 3 1/2 stars from uber-critic Roger Ebert

1. That's neat! Hope it's a big success.
But I gotta tell ya, first thing that popped into my head was, "Frodo's in the 'hood." :D

I couldn't watch the trailer, though. :(

5. Pass on my congratulations!
Unfortunately, I am no where near where the movie will be playing, but pass on my congratulations anyway and my best wishes for success.

So you might be able to see it later.

8. LOL: I've been plugging this movie for awhile
In my private network of acquaintances. Didn't realize it would be connected to DU in any way.

Of course, I've been fascinated with hooligan culture since I read Bill Buford's wonderful Among the Thugs, and absolutely brilliant peice of pop sociology.

Good on your friend, Skinner! I'm looking forward to seeing this movie, after having seen (and disseminated!) all the trailers.

9. I saw Elijah and someone else being interviewed on the View
Elijah wears really thick glasses in the movie for some reason. Something about it sparked my interest.

11. I saw the ad in yesterday's LA Times and made a note of it
So that is an extra cool bonus! Big Congrats to Josh Shelov - I think it is harder to make it as a writer than it is as an actor.

12. go Josh
Skinner,

Thanks for the heads-up. I was wondering when that thing was coming out.

It's sometimes hard to find a movie you are interested in. I mean, there are literally _dozens_ of sites out there on the internets about movies . . ..

13. Excellent trailer Skinner!
Finally a movie that portrays the England I know. I'm from Dagenham near the Docklands and that preview is the closest thing I've seen to what really goes on in the hard parts of London. Thats the land of Georgeous George Galloway, Billy Bragg and many other tough nut politicos. America will finally get a wake up call in that regard as most Americans still think its the land of afternoon tea, Hugh Grants and Colin Firths charm and Christopher Hitchens so called intellect. Englands a tough place among other things.

34. Is this a film about West Ham or Millwall then?
I'm interested to know what "firm" the fictional hooligans are supporting. As long as it's not another film about Sheffield f**king United.

P.S Hate to be nitpicky, but Galloway will alway be the man from Glasgow Kelvin to me. He went down to Bethnal Green carpetbagging because that is exactly the sort of place RESPECT would expect to do well.

15. Congrats to Josh!
Skinner,
This is fabulous! And don't be shy about putting the word out, no need to apologize for "shameless plugs"!

I would like to add a personal note here, as well. In my "previous life" (before becoming a military spouse and having to move all over), I spent almost 13 years in the film business. I was a location manager and director of a film commission in Texas for a number of years. I worked often with filmmakers in Josh's position and he is to be commended for never giving up and always going for what he knew would be great film work! I hope that I have the opportunity to see the film, as there is nothing more rewarding then seeing the work of great filmmakers who need a break!

My congratulations to Josh and his entire crew for getting the film funded, produced and in the can! I hope it does well and I wish Josh all the best in his career - good screenwriters are hard to come by!

Best wishes for his continued success!

16. And from Roger Ebert....
" Of the dead man, we are told: "His life taught me there's a time to stand your ground. His death taught me there's a time to walk away." I guess the time to walk away is before you get killed standing your ground, unless you have a very good reason for standing it. The most frightening thing about the Green Street Elite is the members think they have such a reason, and it is loyalty to the mob. "

17. Damn, the trailer looks incredible!
This movie is a must-see. Saw an Elijah Wood interview; he really wants to shed the Frodo type cast. He's been picking the right roles to do it.

Skinner, I am really curious how your friend did the research for the screenplay. Did he live as a hooligan for a while or something?

I've started a couple screenplays myself and became bogged down in details I couldn't remedy. I felt like I didn't know enough about anything interesting.

25. Not really my cup of tea...
due to the violence, but I would like to see it based on the other actor, Charlie Hunnam, who played a very charming Nicholas Nickleby. In my opinion, an excellent actor and definitely easy on the eyeballs.

If I can get to New York, which isn't that far from me with money, I'll watch it.

If not, I'll definitely watch the DVD as soon as it comes out.
