Polish cat catchers cash in on German rodents

BERLIN/WARSAW - Stray cats from Poland can fetch up to 40 euro in neighbouring Germany where there is a shortage of felines able to hunt a surging population of mice.

Cat-catchers are scouring ally-ways and courtyards in the western Polish city of Poznan and in towns near the German border searching for stray cats to sell in nearby Germany, according to a Thursday report in the regional "Gazeta Poznanska".

Because they can fetch a tidy sum, cats with a litter of kittens are especially sought-after, the daily reported.

German programmes to sterilise cats - both domestic and strays - have caused a dip in the feline population and a consequent boom in the rodent
