1. Repeat after me
'you want fries with that?'

At the rate things are going, you're going to have to pass a credit check to get a job commensurate with your education and experience and then you'll only get one if your bank account proves you don't need it.

But now that you mention it, they did do a credit check...

5. I have a Ph.D. in history
and the job market at the university level was so over crowded with applicants that I ended up teaching high school. I have all the necessary credentials (i.e. several publications and three years of being an adjunct professor), but there are at least several hundred applicants for every position, so out of need for a steady paycheck I tried the high school level; and it turned out well. I teach in a good school with good students and which has a fairly decent pay scale. However, they do not want me for my history skills, but rather my foreign language skills.
On the brighter side, history and culture of the language taught are two of the required topics of foreign language instruction in my state. So, I guess I received most of what I wanted. I have tenure and only eleven years until full retirement.

6. I totally understand
I was headed for a Ph.D. in Psychology until I realized that wouldn't actually result in a job...at least not one that I wanted.

My post wasn't entirely serious. My current job does in fact suck, and I am completely overqualified, but I just got a job in my field of study, that actually uses all of my degrees, and pays well. It's not tenure track yet, but I'm young enough that I don't really care too much.

It sounds like you made the most of your situation anyway. And heck, teaching high schoolers is basically the same thing as teaching college students. Except that the high schoolers are compelled to come to class once in a while. And there *might* be less drinking and frat parties. ;)

7. I teach German
so many of the slackers avoid my class as German is considered difficult. The average SAT score among my students is around 1060 (not bad for SC). They are, for the most part, diligent, well behaved and plan on going to college. I do have it very easy compared to what some other teachers have to endure.

My mentor professor from grad school told me that I was making a salary commensurate to that of a university professor with the same time in position, which was much to my surprise. So, yes, I guess I have made the most of what was available. Heck, I only work 190 days a year (maybe a few extra days here and there, but that's no big deal).
