SITTING PRETTY, AREN'T WE?: These cute furry animals are new members at Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa. For about a week, the six meerkats from a South African zoo have called the Safari Africa habitat at Lowry Park home. Meerkats are no relation to domestic or wild cats. They are actually in the mongoose family and are native to the Kalahari Desert in Africa. Meerkats are primarily insect eaters, but will dine on a lizard, bird, small rodent, an egg or even a poisonous snake. The meerkat is immune to most venom that would kill other larger animals. The zoo is hosting a welcome party at 10 a.m. Saturday in front of the meerkat exhibit. In honor of the animals' diet, zoogoers will be treated to a free bug brunch. Guests will be able to sample tasty treats such as chocolate chirp cookies made with crickets.
