The memory hole
I've been reading 1984 recently (interrupted by Katrina, but hope to get back to it soon), and the memory hole is really getting me. I started thinking about things that had (to me) been dropped down the memory hole, but I had recovered, either from reading online, or talking to my grandparents, in their 80s.

The big thing that came to my mind was "under God" in the pledge. For most of my life, I thought it had always been there. I was raised by Fundies who thought it was terrible in the 80s that prayer was taken out of schools. When I questioned the curch-state issue, I was told that the Founding Fathers put that in there to remind people that no matter how hard you try to keep God out of government, he gets in anyway. It was not until a recent controversy that I learned that it had been inserted in the 1950s.

So, those of you that were there when it happened, and they played it off differently...What did you not drop down the memory hole?
