Victor Jara took political folk music to a new level in Chile in the late sixties and early 70's and became a hero to the people of Chile. In 1971, Victor Jara performed in the Santiago Stadium for Allende and his campaign for office.

However, on September 11, 1973, General Augusto Pinochet, with the backing of the CIA, orchestrated a violent coup of the democratically elected socialist government.

In the resulting coup, Allende was killed and Victor Jara was taken prisoner. Finally, the military brought Victor Jara and other political prisoners to the Stadium of Chile, the place where the concert for Allende had previously been held. They broke Victor Jara's hands so that he couldn't play his guitar, and then taunted him to try and sing and play his songs. With smashed hands, Victor Jara took his guitar and played the anthem of the Popular Party. Shortly after torturing him, the soldiers killed him and dumped his body in a mass grave.

last year was posted by Judi Lynn about Chile's September 11. That's when I knew I had found a home :)
