1. Ulysses S. Grant's middle name was actually Ulysses
His name was Hiram Ulysses Grant but his family always called him "Ulyss". The congressman who put his name in for West Point knew him as such and thought his middle name was Simpson, his mother's maiden name (that was his brother's middle name).

Anyway, when he got to West Point, he tried to correct it but the red tape was ridiculous and upon further reflection, he realized that if he did, his initials on his footlocker would read "HUG".

So he stuck with USG which gave him the nickname Uncle Sam among the cadets. He was known as Sam to his close Army friends for the rest of his life.

11. That's a good one!
I never knew it, and me a history major...for shame.

Anyway, I can see where HUG wouldn't have been good.

By the way, I love your signature, skygazer.

6. Well,
I recall reading it at one point many moons ago. So a grain of salt. But if true, can you imagine 5 #2s ? Just so odd. Almost like cursed. I mean what are the odds that a song that ever hits 2 never spends any time at 1, if you get my drift?

8. Do you think it got overplayed
Or there was not enough marketing money to put it into No.1. Weren't they competing against The Monkees?

10. Mr. Ed, the talking horse, was actually a female zebra....
I kid you not, according to www.snopes.com (which I believe many DUers swear by) anyway.

17. Amazingly enough, they DIDN'T. Since it was b&w, they didn't have to.
Amazing stuff there; it even goes into why NFL wasn't widely televised--the reasons are related to Amelia (aka Mr. Ed)).

Either I am deadly bored (which may be--BAL-boy and Mr. BAL are out watching football), or it's a very cool read.

Maybe both.

They are more closely related to mustelids (weasels).
