Don't Ya Hate It When A Thread Gets Locked Before You Respond
and you start out reading it and then after reading all the posts you try to post and it gets locked?

yeah, i hate it when that happens.

i wanted to say: GET OVER IT...IT'S CALLED PARODY but i can't say it now because the thread is locked.

we can use this thread to respond to all the locked threads you wanted to respond to but couldn't because they were locked.

(it will be a non controversial thread, no names, no specific topics--just vague general comments. will this thread get locked??)

5. There's a huge difference between mocking a religious belief...
and mocking the compulsion some people feel to advertise that belief on their car.

7. Spock ears are inappropriately childish!
I will not stand to have my faith in ancient Vulcan mysticism mocked! I demand that vendors stop selling Spock ears at Star Trek conventions! Plastic spock ears are immature and childish and mock something I hold very sacred and I'm shocked! Shocked I tell you! I can't believe any important serious Star Trek convention would allow themselves to be degraded with cheap Chinese made Spock ears. What would Surak do?

13. I'm leaving this in the hands of a pro...
H.L. Mencken...

One of the most irrational of all the conventions of modern society is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected...

(This) convention protects them, and so they proceed with their blather unwhipped and almost unmolested, to the great damage of common sense and common decency.

That they should have this immunity is an outrage. There is nothing in religious ideas, as a class, to lift them above other ideas.

On the contrary, they are always dubious and often quite silly.

Nor is there any visible intellectual dignity in theologians. Few of them know anything that is worth knowing, and not many of them are even honest.

21. So Exactly When Are We To Take The Bible LITERALLY? And...
... when are we to read the words as being merely symbolic or metaphoric? Make up your fucking mind!

41. ar, didn't you get the memo?
It's very simple, really:

1. When Jesus is saying and doing good stuff, like feeding the poor or casting demons into Gadarene swine, the Bible is to be taken literally. (Well, I guess that one didn't work out too well for the swine. But they had no business being in a kosher neighborhood anyhow.)

2. However, when Jesus is telling you to hate your family or put out your own left eye, it's all strictly symbolic. No one can figure out what the guy was saying, he was so subtle, philosophical and symbolic.

For myself, and with other religious leaders as a template, I'd guess he was a David Koresh-like megalomaniac who meant exactly what he said (assuming the Jesus quoted in the New Testament existed at all).
