Silly airline fares...
On American Airlines (I wouldn't really have a choice), the fare to fly from Kirksville, MO to STL is $153, albeit what's kinda nice about it is the fare is just as good for tomorrow's flight as it is for a flight in the middle of December.

And OMG WE ACTUALLY HAVE 2 FLIGHTS A DAY NOW!!111!! Kirksville is moving up in the world! (Last year we only had one):silly:

But for about $200 more, I can fly on to Seattle (assuming I go over Christmas Break) for about a week to see Grandma, and then continue on to Denver for the Denver Christmas Conference. It would only be a one-way open-jaw ticket because I'll be carpooling back with about ten other people.

What gets me is the fare to fly a couple hundred miles is almost as much as the ADDITIONAL fare to go traipsing all over the country. Airlines. Feh.:eyes:

/end incoherent 3 am rant:evilgrin:

1. The smaller the airport
the higher price to fly. Go figger.

2. I was suprised the fare to fly outta here tomorrow
was the same as the fare in December. Usually they rape your wallet for the no-advance-purchase tix even more than they do for small airports.

3. Airfares are CRAZY!
About three days ago, I was checking fares on Expedia to go from Tallahassee to Rome, Italy. For two people, airfare and hotel for 10 days was between $1200 and $1600 depending on the hotel I chose.

Just for grins, I pulled up Delta.com, and just for AIRFARE alone for two people, no hotel, I was quoted...get this...over $6000! I nearly fell outta my chair!

4. Trolling UAL.com for random fares...

$2537 to go from O'Hare to Sydney today (roundtrip return on 16th)

I can't figure out how to get it to show me the first class fare:evilfrown:

Although I remember off the top of my head that first-class, three-class cabin, last-minute O'Hare to Paris was $11,405 last month. Your $6k from the Delta quote would have bought you a business-class ticket all else being equal.

5. For United, click "More Search Options"
in the upper right corner of the fare finder window.

on American Airlines, first class, round trip fare from DFW to Sydney is around $15,000 per person.

I remember my dad paying around 10k when they went to Austrailia for their honeymoon back in 2000. Even he was floored :)

Did I mention that I've WORKED for UAL? (Albeit as a lowly "customer circus clerk...")

oops, did I say circus? Technically it's "service"

(Edit: Boston-Sydney is a little better, $16,060.:silly:)

11. I tried Sao Paulo-Sydney
Theoretically, it should be GRU-ORD, ORD-SFO or LAX, SFO or LAX-SYD

However, the database said it wasn't a valid itinerary. My guess is because an overnight stay at ORD is required?

12. Ironic how Munich-Sydney is cheaper than Chicago-Sydney
even going through the US (instead of through Asia).

USD $14,923

20. ok here's the deal w. that
you don't lose the air ticket if you pick your own hotel

you can buy the package and not show up and stay at a friend's house or at the boutique hotel of your choosing or go driving into the next city

and you'll still have yr air ticket

it's crazee but that's how it works

enjoy

works for australiasia too!

Don't worry, I'm still here.:)

15. I've been trolling airline sites looking for DC protest fares.
Just a sampling of what I've found:

Orange County (SNA) to Washington Natioal (DCA) (Frontier) - $348
Ontario California (ONT) to DCA (American) - $448
Long Beach, California (LGB) to Washington Dulles (IAD) (Jetblue) - $226
LAX to DCA (Air Tran) - $242
LAX to IAD (Independance Air) - $356
LAX to Baltimore / Washington (BWI) (America West) - $345
SNA to DCA (Delta) - $448
ONT to DCA (Southwest / ATA) - $340

I could pay anywhere from $226 to nearly $500! :wow:

16. I'd take JetBlue
Not only do they have the cheapest fare in this case, but I've heard lots of good things about them. I've never actually flown them, however, so all I have to offer is hearsay;)

18. I've been on Jetblue before
But it was a very very short flight (LGB - Las Vegas) and it was great! Jetblue is a far superior airline to Southwest.

The only problem with flying into Dulles - I need a car. But I did also find an insanely cheap hotel next to a metro line (Days Inn Alexandria - US Rte 1).
