Finally after all of my life I'm actually going to California for my first time, San Diego to be specific. Will be attending at the last week of October and because of the timezone difference I'll probably be flying in on Saturday night.

Any DUers in the San Diego region?

California makes you fall in love with it. It's a seducer, that state! I went to California (San Francisco) in January, and loved it so much that I had to go back again this summer. Now I want to just move there and be done with it.

THe event is at the Cornado but I'll probably stay over the bridge in downtown San Diego and just taxi it to the event.

I'm trying to see if I can get work to justify allowing me to stay at the Cornado though!

20. Forget La Jolla

That's just yuppie madness. Old Town in San Diego is a far better bet. GREAT Mexican food (which means your favorite tequila) and atmosphere.

You will have to find a way to see Mission Bay.

That's the only reason I go (along with visiting the pro shop at Torrey Pines).

it's near Coronado. I hate rental cars so if I can't get my boss to sign off on the Cornado then I'll stay at a hotel located in that area.

40. the marriott on Coronado is less the the Del and cheaper then downtown

and is really nice. The water taxi is right off the back of the pool so you can take that to the gas lamp district to eat and play. I haven't stayed anywhere else for several years I like it so much. It is right at the base of the bridge when you cross over from the mainland. Next to a park and marina.

San Diego also have a beautiful zoo, as well. The climate is close to perfect.

I'm up in the L.A. area, but lived in San Diego years ago.

The Hotel del is an amazing old place. When you get back home and miss it, rent the great old movie The Stunt Man with Peter O'Toole. You get to see WWI airplanes shoot up the Hotel Del!

As other people have said, try to visit La Jolla. I'd also recommend Balboa Park and the zoo, if you have time. Pacific Beach and Imperial Beach are fun places too, or used to be. You can take a "back way" off of Coronado...without crossing the bridge and paying the toll. It's a little causeway that ends in Imperial Beach, IIRC.

Souvenirs, you say? Just pop into Tijuana for a few hours! More velvet Elvises than you can shake a Dashboard Madonna at!

I'm coming in on Saturday Night but the first class starts on Sunday. This class is a certification and if I dont' pass the test my boss won't be happy (I got an 81% on the first one - need 70% to pass and they're tough tests).

Once I get all my flight/hotel details I'll let you guys know but I'll probably be staying somewhere in downtown San Diego and taking a Taxi over to the COronado each day

San Diego is my birthplace, so maybe I am biased, but it is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL city. It can get warm in October, so prepare accordingly.

I live up in Long Beach now but I spent my first 18 years there. Nice town. Besides the gas lamp district which someone already mentioned, I'd recommend going to Balboa Park. It has lots of cool museums (Native American, science and natural history), the zoo is down there and is just generally a calm, pretty place to hang out.

I'm getting in early to SD on Saturday but I'm taking the redeye home on Tuesday. And this class room is a certification which if it's anything like the last one I'll be doing a ton of studying in my room at night!

San Diego is not bad, mind you, and I will admit that one can find passable mexican food there, but if you're coming to California, you MUST come to far NorCal to understand what REALLY makes this state special. SoCal is just earthquake fodder (well, they have some nice deserts too). Northern California is the real deal. :popcorn:
