We're making this effort to save the dying pets in NOLA. Some of them are being fed by the kind-hearted guys in the field who WANT to rescue them, but aren't being allowed to. Many are not being fed, and are dying.

PLEASE come kick and nominate the thread at the link below onto the Greatest page, and make your phone calls ... to the White House. There is a guy, who's pretty high up, who thinks that this is the only way to get Governor Blanco to order that the pets be rescued -- get the WH to lean on her.

Since we all know that the one residing in the WH is a partisan POS, I would recommend putting a partisan spin on your plea. eg: "Why isn't Gov. Blanco doing the right thing? She's infuriating her constituents and people all across the country -- on the left and on the right!"

Please come help these dying furbabies

19. Kick
Anderson Cooper did a story on this at CNN. They need to move some of the animals out of state to have room for more but so far they have not been allowed to.

5. I love the Lounge. Whenever I need a break from politics, and want to look
at adorable furbaby pics, this is where I come to.

Your calls and emails, today AND BEYOND, (we just can't stop until these pets are rescued) will help to save countless lives.

And if there's one thing I know, it's that the Lounge people love their babies.

Guys like these will be rescued because of you!

This is just killing me. This is the way "backwards" countries treat animals.

>> “It’s truly a race against the clock. Our teams are working feverishly to rescue as many animals as possible and get them out of the watery cesspool left behind by Hurricane Katrina.”
-HSUS President & CEO
Wayne Pacelle

Dear Supporters,
After initially being blocked from entering the most devastated areas in Louisiana and Mississippi, HSUS Disaster Animal Response Teams (DART) have been working around the clock to help save stranded and sick animals.

What we are finding is truly heartbreaking – animals trapped in flooded houses, caregivers wandering the streets desperately searching for their beloved pets, and nearly destroyed animal shelters where the surviving animals have spent days keeping their heads above water in their cages.

But this is why we are here and why we are counting on our supporters to help spread the word about our disaster efforts on the Gulf Coast.

Block after block, our teams are entering homes and apartments, sometimes forced to break into them, searching for stranded animals. Yesterday in Mississippi, one of our DART teams rescued a dog who had been washed into someone's attic; the storm surge had stranded the animal. The woman who owned the house was elderly; she had slipped some food and water into the attic for the dog, but hadn't been able to go upstairs to carry him out.
We are finding and rescuing more animals as each hour passes - more than a thousand so far - but with many more thousands needing our help. In the past two days, we've focused on these activities:

• Marshalling all of our resources to provide relief for these animals. We have 125 people and 39 support vehicles in Louisiana, and more than 10 emergency personnel and 17 support vehicles in Mississippi. The call is out for many more rescuers to converge on these two states before it is too late.

• Calling on ALL federal, state, and local responding agencies to help provide animal rescue assistance immediately. Even though we've been able to put hundreds of people in the field, we worry they may not be enough.

• Logging thousands of telephone calls through our HSUS call center, as well as responding to thousands of emails. Staff members in every section at headquarters dropped their normal duties to assist in the response to Katrina, searching for boats, trucks, crates, carriers, supplies, food, and other essential items for transport and operations in the impact zones of Louisiana and Mississippi.

• Establishing our online Disaster Center at www.hsus.org featuring critical updates on our relief efforts, video and slideshow footage, and ways that individuals can help us save even more animals affected by Katrina. We’re encouraging all our supporters to visit the website often and take a moment to let others know about our emergency response.

In the days ahead, we will be expanding our large-scale rescue of the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina. In light of the devastation we have witnessed, our rescue efforts cannot come fast enough. Again, thank you for your recent donation and please take a moment to tell a friend about our efforts.

Sincerely,

Laura Bevan
Incident Commander
HSUS National Disaster Animal Response Team
Jackson, Mississippi

Good guys include:

BestFriends.com
PasadoSafeHaven.org
and the guys at GulfSails: http://www.gulfsails.blogspot.com

These people are doing the harder work -- including water rescues. :)

(There are good and bad reports about the larger groups. But I KNOW that the three listed above are heroes.)

14. The White House went to voicemail with no way to leave message
So I called Blanco's office and got automatically transferred to FEMA. The guy who answered said, "More effort is being put on rescuing humans, ma'am."

I guess that means there are still some humans that need rescuing too.

Jesus. Those poor critters (human and animal).

Regarding the heartless jerk at the Gov's office :grr:

Different people answer the 866 line though, many are compassionate animal lovers too, and will empathize. Pets matter too! They are someone's family members. Haven't the people of NOLA lost enough already? Sorry you had to talk to someone who doesn't get that. :(

Edited on Mon Sep-12-05 07:35 PM by lindisfarne
Media contacts and contact numbers for authorites, plus sample letter here - blast the media to get authorities to let pet owners back into NO to rescue their pets

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4732630

They're letting business owners in to rescue computers before they allow pet owners in to rescue pets that have precious little time left??? See Times-Picayune article here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4740236&mesg_id=4740236

Edit to add the following: The Times-Picayune seems to have either pulled or moved that article. Below is the original text which was posted 9/11:

N.O. business owners can obtain one-day passes to retrieve business records
http://www.nola.com/newslogs/breakingtp/index.ssf?/mtlogs/nola_Times-Picayune/archives/2005_09_11.html#078890
Sunday, 6:07 p.m.

New Orleans business owners and operators who have firms located in the Central Business District can get one-day permits to retrieve “essential information from their businesses,’’ State Police spokesman Johnnie Brown said.

He said the permits can obtained from the New Orleans Police Department by calling 504-599-5541 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily.

Brown said the passes are good daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. only for business district offices, and do not allow the owners to visit their homes or tour the city. “It is designed to allow someone to retrieve payroll records or a (computer) hard drive,’’ Brown said.

He said when the individual applies for the permit, a name, address, fax number and other detailed business information must be given to police.

“This will allow the individual to go straight to the business,’’ Brown said. “The NOPD will strictly enforce the permits’’ and not allow business owners to stay past 6 p.m.
