For the newer people: Ways to get more replies to your threads
I know that it can be frustrating when you first come here and it seems that no one is paying attention to your posts and threads. The truth is, even after being here a while your threads still have a chance of dropping and you will have hundreds of posts that don't get a reply.

It's something that everyone here goes through, but just to help you out I have come up with a list of things to do if you want to watch your threads build up the numbers.

1) Most cooking threads take off. The way to really get it going is to state that you make the best ribs, chicken, steak or anything else over an open fire. For some reason "me make best food on fire" statement hasn't wavered since the dawn of human existence. To add a bit of flare to the thread state that you use propane, charcoal or wood to cook your hunk of meat, in fact that can be a thread of its own.

2) Speaking of food, say something that will make the traditionalist gasp. For example, say that you boil your ribs in grape soda or that you coat your chicken with Fruit Loops. This is bound to get the fires burning and you will watch your thread flame up like lighter fluid on your gas grill.

3) Change your username to SkinnerPitt.

4) Correct the people on DU that moron is spelled m-o-r-o-n and not m-o-r-a-n. This should automatically get you 50 responses of the explanation of why "moran" is used here. Chances are that 30-40% or so posts will also be accompanied w/ a photo.

5) Start a thread on Britney Spears. For some odd reason the pop diva has effected many lives and any thread on her will keep you on the first page for days. Even a thread such as "Britney Spears walked her dog today" will automatically get you 25-30 posts in a few minutes and they will continue to build for a week or more. Sure it's a cheap move, but hey... it gets ya the numbers.

6) Next is music. Music threads are bound to get you replies. Music is a funny thing, it is something that I believe is part of our inner being from the day we are born, but yet has caused more arguments in conversations than religion and politics combined. Every person likes some sort of music and because there are thousands of different types of music and millions of performers of music, it is guaranteed that not everyone will like the exact same thing.

Music is a very personal part of our being, but yet people will still argue over who's taste in music is better. It's absurd but true. So if you start a music thread people will undoubtedly feel that because one person doesn't like what they like it is a personal attack. It's a way to get the numbers flowing and because there is never a correct answer to "who is the best", the thread could go on for quite a while.

7) Smoking... oh yeah! "I love smoking", "I hate smokers", and "second hand smoke" threads will bring 'em in. It might start out slow, but the flames to follow will ultimately be  heaven.

8) Children in restaurants or supermarkets are other topics that have been known to bring some numbers to the table. Never suggest how a person should raise their children, it could burn ya but good.

9) Religion is the holy grail of numbersville. Because of the number of major world religions, beliefs and non-beliefs, combined with the hundreds of splinters of each of those, we have thousands of possibilities. You are bound to piss off a hand full of people, who will then each piss off another handful of people and so on and so on and so on. It's a 98% chance that your thread will get locked, but you will ring up the numbers faster than you can say "Mel Gibson".

Well, that's a few ideas I have for you if you feel that your threads die too fast. As I said, we all experience it and it's part of being in a crowd of 70,000 plus people. I'm sure there are some other ideas out there so be my guest and add some more.

6. Blowin' in the Wind....
How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
Yes, 'n' how many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, 'n' how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist
Before it's washed to the sea?
Yes, 'n' how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, 'n' how many times can a man turn his head,
Pretending he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

44. Or ANY regional differences!!!!
E.G.: The people in (insert state, city, town, region) are all a bunch of (insert pejorative). Out will come even lurkers to tell you that you are in error! Some will be apoplectic, guaranteed!

For that matter, any broad brush statement about any subject will do! If you do not think all military personnel are evil tools of the empire, and so state, there will be debate on that score!

And then, there's ART--if you don't like some piece of avante-garde art, and say so, you will be trampled!!!

And you cannot forget the progressive and Democratic infighting--if you happen to like one particular party leader, and say so forcefully, you can get a great debate going without too much trouble, for surely there will be some who find your pick to be a corporate shill, a sell-out, not as good as Brand Y Candidate...it's a real 'eat your young' fest at times!

Ain't that America!

I do recall the cat threads- mine all run loose..and run all over on the roof and run up tall trees...

I am working on the obligatory 1,000 posts and I think every one of my 700 and something has sunk thus far.

Spent too much time on this one last week- and was disappointed it had no legs:

40. LOL!!!! But may I add a few *serious* suggestions?
Stick around and tend your thread, don't post 'n' run. Take the time to chat with the people who reply to you.

Post something with an invitation to share, i.e. share your suggestions, share your stories, ask for opinions, etc.

If you want the reader to do something, be explicit: i.e., please write your representiative (and include a link), please sign this petition (and include a link), stuff like that.

Long posts that obviously took a lot of work but are sort of "thesis-like" get read, but don't get many replies, because, well, what's to say? However, you'll know people are reading these if they get nominations for Greatest but not many replies. For these, I'll kick 'em until they get to the Greatest page and then let them alone. It's just the fast-moving nature of DU that the serious stuff is not going to take off like a house-on-fire, whereas the controversial (and sometimes trivial) does.

Reply to OTHER people's threads whom you like. Turn about is fair play! Creates good karma too.

There. I know you were just having fun but I felt inspired to share. :7

Then post about such "cool" topics.

73. I was merely pointing out that the info given in the OP is the truth.
It is just sad. We are trying (I think) to show others that we are better than the current gang of bullies that are ruining everything, yet Brittany Spears generates the greatest response?

87. Geez. Do people have to be serious
ALL THE TIME? Most people come here to relax and when they don't want to think about politics or want a break. Is that so bad? Most of the threads here are meant to be silly. Is being judgemental something you are also against? Because you seem to be doing a pretty good job of it.:-(

This IS the lounge and isn't to be taken too seriously. There are many other boards on DU for "intelligent" conversation.

I guess I could have added "attack the people of DU" to my list in the OP, but I figured that was a given. :hi:

71. You're absolutely right.
We must never succumb to mirth, for to do so would be to cede victory to the enemy. Rather, we must spend all our idle hours huddled together around a gas-lamp, reciting to one another from "Quotations of Chairman Mao Tse-Tung." The Revolution, indeed, is NOT a tea party.

Funny how I just posted in GD, and got fifteen replies on my misspelling.
But when I finally posted what I wanted to post, I got one person saying they thought it was a stupid post.

I then came here to post my thoughts on posts, and well, you beat me to it.

120. So I'm sitting here cookin' up a mess o' the best ribs on the planet
and enjoying a big, fat stogie, when it hits me. Brittany Spears is the ONE TRUE GOD, as well as the preeminent vocal talent of the ages. The holy chorus hides in shame whenever they hear her dulcet tones in Her Domain.
Unfortunately my reverie is interrupted by the awful shrieking of a pack of rug rats that have been turned loose in my back yard by their irresponsible, negligent parental units to wreak havoc on the rest of the community. I shouted out "why didn't you cretins all have abortions when you had the chance!" to which they replied, in unison, "How dare you insinuate that our beautiful, perfect children are not!" and they came at me with pitchforks and torches. Fortunately for me, the prescient repugs had restored my right to have a trusty AK-47 at hand, and I was able to mow them all down, like the worthless, liberal, scum they were.
K?
