'Miracle baby' puts mom in jail


Nairobi - Kenyan prosecutors on Wednesday charged a woman with child theft for claiming she'd given birth to a "miracle baby" without having sex.

They said Mary Deya, the wife of London-based self-styled "archbishop" Gilbert Deya, stole an infant on September 10 at Kenyatta National Hospital, and later claimed the same infant was a "miracle baby," and wasn't a product of copulation.

Resident magistrate Catherine Mwangi sent her to custody after prosecutors said Mary, who was facing other similar cases in court, could attempt to influence witnesses.

The court fixed September 30 as the hearing date for Mary, who had infamously become an infamous household name for peddling such claims.
