Hurrah for Arvo Pärt - plus what are you listening to?
The greatest living composer.

To celebrate his 70th birthday www.eclassical.com (with whom I have no connexion - this isn't a crass marketing tool) has bundled a bunch of his stuff together (along with some Sibelius which one can ignore, and Janácek) for $5.99.

I've just downloaded (and am playing)

For Aliina,
Collage sur BACH,
Fratres (strings and percussion version),
Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten (a piece of music to die for),
Summa,
Festina Lente, and
Tabula Rasa.

I would heartily recommend this to everybody.

Now what are you chaps listening to at the moment?

1. The new Sigur Ros.
I was at a Kronos Quartet concert and they said that Sigur Ros was their favorite band!

I love Arvo Part, too. Maybe I'll listen to some today...

One of my very first CDs was the first CD put out by his label, the one with Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten and Fratres and Tabula Rasa.

I'd never heard of the guy, but a stereo store in town had a used copy for like $7 or something.

I became an immediate fan, and that was 1985 or 1986.

I got to hear the Cantus peformed live in the early 90s at BAM. Exquisite!

3. Arvo Pärt writes indescribably moving music
I can't listen to it all the time, but it is occasionally required.

I agree with you about the Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten.

Also a huge Fratres fan. Thanks for the tip.

5. Basic, maybe - gorgeous, definitely.
Nothing like a good bit of Vivers in the afternoon.

6. I love Pärt!

Te Deum is my favorite.

But right now I am listening to my iPod shuffle.

Cassandra Wilson singing Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow" just ended.
Listening to a track from Verve Remixed 3 right now.

Specifically, the encores. Right now, it's "June", by his former band, Spock's Beard. Woah. Pete Trawavas of Marillion is about to come onstage, I think. Looks like a Transatlantic song is about to be played.
