What is the most expensive piece of clothing you own?
Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 09:57 AM by kick-ass-bob
This $130 price of jeans got me - so what is the most expensive apparel you have? (Shoes, jackets, hats, etc included)

I have a $150 suit jacket. I also own a leather jacket from 1988 that cost about $200 at that time (but it has probably depreciated in 17 years)

Watcha got?

1. Well, I do have a couple of dresses that I paid the same
amount as the jeans. So I guess close to $150.00 would be the most expensive piece of clothing I own at least that I paid for. My aunt bought me a $300 jacket and a $400 purse!

10. Back when I had to dress professionally for work...
I had a Hugo Boss suit that was cost me around $400 at a half price sale. Unfortunately, my ex-wife's dog shredded it several years back, though that was after business casual became standard.

I had a few other suits that were close to that in price, though I generally paid less than $200 for many.

29. I do NOT spend lots of money on clothing....
European orthopedic sandals at $100?

Some recent time off was spent in high-class charity resale shops. Bought a couple of lovely handbags made in Italy--lined with thin leather, quite luxurious. I paid a total of $8 but someone spent a lot more.

But I was more excited about that 50 cent edition of "I Claudius." When I got home, I discovered that it was autographed. An enclosed slip of paper read "Mr Robert Graves, Deya, Majorca."

33. Shoes, definitely
I wear cheap-ass clothes, but my feet are always happy. Today I am wearing a pair of Dansko's that I probably paid $120 for. I think they're my most expensive.

Last weekend I splurged on a handmade super-saucy boobie shirt from the Rennaissance Festival - raw silk, black lace - gorgeous, it cost $72. That is by FAR the single most expensive piece of clothing in my wardrobe. But honestly, it was like art-work, it was as much about supporting the artist (and the 4 beers I drank in the hot sun :P )

The $500 includes about $100 worth of alterations (I'm not easy to fit).

And I have a Burberry trench coat with full-length button-out wool liner that costs about $1K-1200 new (I paid far less for mine on Ebay, and it was in like-new condition)...does that count?

35. My wedding dress cost $300
Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 10:36 AM by eyesroll
I'm thinking of donating it. No offense to my ex, or to my parents who paid for it -- but it's just sitting in my closet, I'm never going to wear it again, and maybe someone else could get some use out of it.

(Next time I get married, if there is a next time, it's not going to be in a "wedding dress.")

As far as day-to-day clothing goes...nothing I own is very expensive at all. I buy a lot of thrift and vintage. One of my favorite dresses -- silver Marilyn-style party dress -- was $30, vintage. Today, I'm wearing jeans ($5, thrift), an Ambercrombie and Fitch collared shirt that I wouldn't normally have purchased ($2, thrift), and boots ($5, clearance, kids' section at Kohls). I think my bra is the most expensive thing I'm wearing today, aside from glasses.

Oh, on edit: I've also got a light jacket today, thrift, $10.

I'm trying to go to law school next year, though, and I'll probably need to update my wardrobe, for interviews/events and later, for a job. We're business casual here (casual on Fridays).

I have a calfskin leather jacket that was $300 a few years ago. Other than that, most of my other stuff is fairly cheap-- price-wise.

My prescription eyeglasses were $360, if you consider those 'clothing'. IMHO, they're more like a crutch or a wheelchair, because I am completely lost without them.

The tux, however, has now paid for itself (we figured he would have to wear it about a dozen times to recoup what it would have cost for rentals!

I don't have a pic of it, but it's crimson brocade with black lace trim. The boning is probably what makes it so expensive.

The only expensive clothes I have are my goth & Ren clothes (corsets, gowns and such), but stuff like that corset only gets worn on special occasions (cons, clubs, etc). My most expensive daily wear is a pair of $90 Tripp bondage pants I got for $50. They're just so damn cool.

73. when I was an evil corporate lawyer in NYC for one of the monster
firms... I had a winter coat over $1,000 and a few pricey suits, though I'd go to Emporio Armani ("mid" line) rather than full-price Armani.

Expensive shoes and boots, but when I was working $450 shoes weren't considered the norm in NYC... $200 was high. These last few years, the prices of nice items of clothing have really, really, really skyrocketed.

The Jimmy Choos and Manolo Blahnik brands have really fucked things up when it comes to middle-incomers being able to buy nice, well made shoes every once in a while.

Some things are worth spending a little more on, like a good suit or a warm jacket. Items like jeans, cords, t-shirts, anything over $50 (or over $20 for a t-shirt) is just stupid. That can be $50 on sale, but I think $100+ jeans are an insult. I mean, for chrissakes, it is DENIM -- cut counts, yes, but you don't have to spend $$$ for well cut denim.

74. $400 (not custom made) riding boots.
They are black Ariat field boots for hunt seat lessons and hunter-jumper shows. Field boots are the tall english riding boots with the little laces at the top of the foot. They fit wonderfully but are impossible to remove except with either A.) a boot jack or B.) someone to pull them off.

I know why military men used to die with their boots on. They couldn't get them off! ;)

Forcing one's best friends to intentionally envelope themselves in puffy, ugly outfits is so cruel. If I ever get married, we're all going nude!

Just kidding. But I'd pick something flattering to everyone. Not only that I care about my friends, but also that I want people to look at me and not the taffeta monstrousity hanging from a bridesmaid's ass.

116. You get no argument from me
That damn dress cost $200 twelve years ago. At that point I hadn't spent more than $20, ever, on anything for myself. (In fact, I vividly remember anguishing over spending that $20, for a Ralph Lauren dress on sale. The $200--which at that time in my life I would have used to buy a car--is still too painful for me to relive.)

for years I couldn't afford it.

Now when I might be able to, I have to make up for savings/investments for all of the years that I couldn't afford a splurge (and couldn't affor to invest - just could afford to live.)

I have spent $150 on a suit - but on the suit parts - so that they matched other outfits and allowed me to have multiple professional looking outfits as a result.

Edited on Fri Sep-16-05 10:52 PM by Dem2theMax
till the day I die. And I won't die from the cold as it's good to a point WAY below zero. I don't believe in spending large amounts of money on clothing. I think it's wasteful and in most cases, all people are doing by spending large amounts on clothing is to show off. The $115.00 I spent was spent for survival. I lived in the mountains, worked outside in weather well below zero and the jacket kept me safe.

A t-shirt, tennis shoes and an old pair of 501's are all I need.

111. I own a tuxedo worth a few hundred. I had two weddings and a reunion...
all within the space of two weeks, so it would have cost almost as much to rent a tuxedo for all of that as it did to buy it.

But then I bought extra shirts, two cummerbunds, two bowties... it adds up.

Other than that, there's my Brooks Brothers suit I wore at my Bar Mitzvah which for some reason is still hanging in my closet. I don't know how much it actually cost-- and that was back in 1983 when money was worth much more. But it can't be cheap. My grandfather bought it for me, and he had great taste.

That particular item will be going to The Red Cross soon.

Somewhere there is either an evacuee kid who needs a suit to attend worship services, or maybe there's a midget who needs to go on job interviews. Or else The Red Cross will simply sell it.

114. I have a $260 dress that I bought to go to a wedding,
that I decided not to wear. I decided it was just not rite for the wedding. I got carried away trying on all those beautiful dresses at the dress shop. The woman who sold it to me said that there were only 2 dresses like it. One Miss California owns and I own the other one. SO I also had to buy a pair of shoes that I paid $120 for. Oh but so beautiful. I will wear the dress and shoes next time we go to Vegas.

I wore a $12.00 dress from the thrift store with my $120 shoes to the wedding.

My wedding dress was $220.

I must say that I am a total thrift store shopper. The dress and shoes above were a gift from my husband. He loved the dress and shoes on me.

119. I usually don't spend much on clothes but
when it comes to sneakers, boots, coats, or lingerie I'm willing to spend good money. I've got a few pairs of sneakers and boots I've spent $150 on, a couple of $200 coats, and I think the most I've spent on a bra is $75. Of course I had to buy the $20 matching underwear. When it comes to everything else it hurts me to spend more than $50 dollars.

The most expensive items I own however are all gifts.

120. Hmm....I own a Coach briefcase which cost $500 that I bought myself
and some North Face jackets (I love North Face) that were far from cheap. I have a North Face rain coat that cost $245 but it keeps me from getting wet even in the most heavy downpour.

I also have a pair of Gore Tex shoes that are very water proof.

I also own a few Lacoste shirts (used to be Izod-Lacoste back in the '80s).

I also have a Kenneth Cole purse I spent $180 on approx 11 years ago. I use that to go to High Holy Day services and other more dressy events. I love that purse. It holds a book or two, my PDA with room for a magazine.

I have champaign taste on a beer budget. I am also a serious gadget-holic.

123. Aside from my wedding dress
I don't have any clothes or shoes that I spent more than $100. Even in cases where I wanted something nice like a formal dress or interview suit, I purposely looked for items that were on sale which knocked their price below $100. Even when I have money or a gift certificate, price and whether something is on sale is a major part of my decision. I like to have a variety of clothing so I don't see the point in spending a lot on a single item.
