'Trill' isn't gone for B.B. at 80

Riley B. King took his guitar and left the cottonfields of Mississippi for the bright lights of Memphis nearly 60 years ago, and the thrill still hasn't gone for the blues legend.

He turns 80 Friday, and he has a new album out, appropriately titled 80, and a string of tour dates and tributes coming up. Retirement doesn't enter the conversation.

"I wonder sometimes why I'm left here, because I haven't had a halo around my head all my life," says King, who is in Washington for an early 80th-birthday news conference after a local concert. "I never did get on hard drugs or anything. In my early years I used to like to drink, but I guess that's been 35, 40 years ago.

"The Great One must have a reason for leaving me here. I don't know why he did, but I am grateful."<snip>
