went in between finger nail -- ouchie. her work gloves had a small hole in just the right place. she also "smushed" the same finger with a piece of wood...

the truck that came with the wood couldn't fit next to where we wanted to stack it - so it was dumped as close as possible.

this meant using a wagon and a wheelbarrow to move the wood about 30 feet.

I used the wheelbarrow, my partner used the wagon. On my first load I did not have the wheelbarrow on very level ground, so when I went to move it - me and the wheelbarrow fell over - banged my knees a bit...

2. How long did it take you ...

I start stacking cords soon.

finished up around 3:30ish

but we also had to move it closer to the wood pile -- truck that delivered it couldn't get closer...

the load coming tomorrow is in a smaller truck and can get into the spot where we stack - should take less time stacking

6. What kind of wood, do you use a maul?

The carpenters working on the condo next door had to replace a 16 ft. 4x16 beam, because of the fire damage and said I could have it. A young neighbor help me cut and split it up, it was doug fir, which I know has a little too much resin in it and burns a little hot. But is seems to work in my fireplace just fine. We used my electric chain-saw , an axe head and a framing hammer to do the deed.

with this load, some maple - but mostly oak

the load coming tomorrow will most likely be hickory

we get wood from two different people - so it varies

some pieces are a bit big, so we have a spliter thingy we bought from the home shopping network. works good

we split it the pieces needing spliting as needed during the winter

Is it hard wood or soft? Is wood your sole source of heat?

ran us $85 a cord - a cord lasts us about a month, burning it in the evenings and on weekends

tomorrow's load is just shy of a cord - he charges about $60 a truck load

18. see, the area I come from, I almost could not give my wood away

ten years ago, I sold a pickup load for $10, and that was wood that I had cut, hauled and split with just hand tools. I probably have a cord of wood that is just rotting on my property 400 miles away, unless my neighbor is harvesting it, which would not bother me at all. When a tree falls in the forest, it should be cut up into firewood whether it makes a sound or not.

a cord measures 8 feet long, 4 feet high and 2 feet deep

wood pieces are usually cut into approx 2ft pieces to fit nicely into a wood stove

Hubby has injured back, oldest son off at college. Actually me and younger son and my brother will stack it tomorrow. NOT looking forward to the aching afterward but a nice cozy fire this winter will make it all worthwhile! I'm jealous, wish we were all stacked by now and tomorrow could be that day of rest thing people talk about.

23. We cut, split and stack our wood

My BF and I.... IMOP the cutting sucks the most. We start in mid-August when both mosquito's and black flies are still around. It's usually still hot (by Maine standards) therefore the bugs are a constant presence.

BF cuts down the tree, gets rid of the branches, and then cuts it up in smaller pieces. I haul the branches off and by the time I'm done, it's time to start taking the logs to the truck.

We vary at this point. Sometime we take a truckload home to split and stack, other times we haul it home but split and stack later. Mostly it depends on the timetable.

We rely completely on wood heat. It costs nothing but hard work since we own the land.

22. How many does it take for you?

We used to use 7+ cord per/season, but after extra insulation and new windows, we used only 5 cord last year. We do have oil backup but have never used it since the wood is free (off our land)

BTW- You deserve a big pat on the back. Stacking 2 cords is not an easy thing!!!

we only got 3 cords - started using it in Ocotber (got cold fast) and it lasted us until mid-January

Since we both work during the week - the routine is to fire up the stove at night, add more in the morning and then turn it down before we leave for work. Weekends we run it all day/night

we're figuring 6 cords should do it, if we can afford 1-2 cords more than that we'll get it, and what we don't use this year we'll use next year

we have oil heat, temp is set at 60deg when we use the stove - we also get our hot water off the furnace, so we do have to keep it running at least at the minimum temperature

will also be doing more insulating and buttoning up the house

25. 3/4's of a cord stacked this morning

the guy from down the road showed up about an hour ago and dumped about 3/4 of a cord... $50 for a truckload - can't beat that

he has some other stuff - not "high grade" - small stuff 2-3" diameter and odd ball pieces - he'll sell us that for $30 a truck load. Good enough for burning. We're getting that next weekend.
