This beer sucks.

A friend of mine told me I had to try Stella Artois...best damn beer on the planet.

Well, I guess I've had worse; but there's nothing at all remarkable about it. I fact, it's pretty insipid. I think I'll give the rest to my rethuglican brother-in-law. :-)

I had it when I was in Ann Arbor actually. I got it at a small wine/liquor store called Village Square I thhink.

I also love theh Guinness extra Stout and Young's Oatmeal Stout. Good stuff.

10. In defense of Stella

Stella is a light lager and in my experience such beers do not travel well. If I could get my hands on Augustiner Edelstoff here in the same condition that I could in Bavaria, I'd keep a shitload of it ready at all times. But I can't, so I'm better off drinking Leinenkugels. Salvator, on the other hand is a dark as hell 7.5%alc beer that reaches the US in good condition, so although I'd take a fresh Mass of Augustiner over a fresh Mass of Salvator 90% of the time, I no longer even bother to get Augustiner when I see it.

31. Actually Weizen doesn't travel that well, it's weird

When I went to live in Bavaria for the first time, I had already done some drinking of weizen in the US. I had enjoyed it, but when I got there I was able to get much fresher bottles of it that had incredible amounts of weizen's unique clove/banana/bubblegum flavor (which flavor varies from brand to brand). They were so much better there and when I got back they no longer had the same level of flavor, but what was left was a generally pleasant beer. A bottle of Schneider-Weiss in the US is not the same animal that it is in Europe.

In fact the reason India Pale Ale got it's name is because it was brewed with extra hops, and that's what allowed the beer to survive the journey to India, which was several months at the time.

43. I would too, but with pasteurization things are somewhat different

the danger is no longer spoilage because the beer has been cleansed, but rather skunking from exposure to light and heat. I've never heard of a Guiness or a Salvator skunking, but a pilsner urquell which is fairly hoppy can get to you really skunked. Or course, if you add a shitload of hops like an IPA, you'd probably never notice the skunking because the hops are so overpowering.

I love Guinness so much (and have been a stalwart supporter for so long) that I bought a CASE of it for my boyfriend for the senior prom (don't ask how I pulled that off), and we drilled holes in the tool box of his pickup, iced it down, and put all the 24 Guinnesses in there.

IT ROCKED!

I also like Shiner Bock and John Smith's and, probably my favorite of all time, Old Peculiar. mmmmmmmmmm

...just like Budweiser is great in the Czech Republic and Lowenbrau is good in Germany. But the mass produced American counterparts just don't translate well. Sadly even Guinness, while it beats any mass produced domestic, is considerably different from what they sell in Dublin.

As for "Belgian" beers, I can get decent trippels and abbey ales from local breweries and I don't live anywhere near Brussels.
