The back wheel was stolen from my bike

Whoever stole it walked out the gate, right past the State Police, holding the rear wheel of a bike.

I thought it was all safe, well hidden.

I'm so sick of this crime ridden piece of shit city!!!

Just weeks ago I was in a small Colorado town where you didn't even have to lock up your bike.

You know those barends that attach to the ends of your handlebar? They are screwed on...Well, those were stolen from another bike of mine a couple of years ago.

I just get tired of the theft. Everyone I know has had a bike stolen, or a car stolen, or car radio stolen. And I am so damn broke that it's going to take me a few weeks to save up for a new wheel.

5. If it's a good bike, you don't need tools

Yeah, on a cheap bike the wheels are bolted on and you need a wrench, but on a good bike the wheels are held on with quick-releases. Flip the quick-release, take off the wheel, and walk away.

Which practically mandates that when you park the bike, you flip the quick release on the front wheel, take it off, then run your cable lock through both wheels and the frame before securing it to an immovable object.

6. Who steals an f'ing wheel?

Sure, if some dipshit thief needs it because his back hub or sprocket (both of which should last damn near forever) is toast, then I see his reasoning. Otherwise...wtf?

7. Rule of thumb for quick release

Make sure your both wheels are locked. At a minimum use one of the heavy duty, ultra secure locks for the frame and rear wheel. You can use a cheaper one, even a cable for the front wheel. I usually carry three. But recently one of my U-locks froze on the back rack and had to be sawn off.

My philosophy: Compare the effort of locking (even with two locks) to the effort in work that would earn the cost of a bike.
