Permission to get angry, captain?
Blair attacks BBC for 'anti-US bias'

James Robinson, David Smith and Ned Temko
Sunday September 18, 2005
The Observer

Tony Blair has denounced the BBC's coverage of Hurricane Katrina as 'full of hatred of America' and 'gloating' at the country's plight, it was reported yesterday.

Blair allegedly made the remarks privately to Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, which owns the rival Sky News.

The comments threatened a new rift between the government and the BBC following the Andrew Gilligan affair over events leading to the Iraq war and recent criticisms of ministers Today presenter John Humphrys, which were controversially leaked to the press.

Ok, I admit. I don't know what the BBC's coverage was like, because I don't have a TV. But I don't believe for a second that it was either gloating or full of hatred of America.

What this asshole does not seem to understand is that we actually trust the BBC, which is more than can be said for that cynical bastard.

1. I consider BBC a reputable news source.
Mr. Blair's criticism of BBC says more about _him_ than it says about BBC. :grr:

2. He's been in office too long
I heard a theory that all leaders go mad within about eight years. The power makes them crazy. Thatcher went certifiably wacko. Major was in power for seven years, but he never actually had a chance to go bonkers because he was always putting out fires in his government for the last four years. Blair has now been in office for about eight years, and it is quite clear that he has gone batshit insane, to use the DU term.

The US system of limiting presidents to two terms seems quite sensible viewed in that light, even if Republicans only instituted the rule because FDR's four election victories pissed them off so much they never wanted such a thing to happen again. It seems to me the right rule nevertheless.

5. The BBC is better than most US stuff
Edited on Sun Sep-18-05 10:14 AM by miss_kitty
but I blew a gasket over their Haiti coverage, which was more of a screed against Aristide, I wrote them and they never responded. I have gotten many responses for them in the past.

They DO report less biased views of the US govt in most things though. And you'll see pics on the BBC that you won't see here.

I used to get Canal 5 from France and I found their coverage to be great. Nice to see someone treat the chimp's poo flinging with the open sarcasm and disdain it deserves. Sometimes C-Span will run it. Also ITV news out of England is award winning respected reporting, but sadly, I don't get THAT anymore, either...

You can stream the BBC stuff.
