What does CV mean, as opposed to resume?
I had never heard the term CV until a month ago or so, but a friend of my wife was chatting with us about how she did some fellowship to help build her CV (the friend of my wife is a cardiologist)... I later found out CV was another word for resume.

Now, I see CV all over the place.

1. It's latin
Curriculum Vitae

They've always been called that in the UK.

2. curriculum vitae
It's suppose to be more detailed than a resume. It usually consists of more than one page.

5. thanks
Being a cardiologist, more detailed is probably why she would use a CV as opposed to a resume.

8. When I lived in Europe, it was all called a CV, regardless of your trade
But here, I've noticed, they call them CVs in the medical community. I once wrote a story about a doctor and she gave me her CV to get my facts straight. And she had so many details, including volunteer work, published work, internships, etc.

It was several pages long.

3. I think CVs are more of a European thing.
Resumes are more American, but it's the same basic setup with some minor changes.

6. Teachers and other professionals
such as doctors, scientists, etc. usually refer to their collection of work as a "C.V." rather than as a resume. Resume is used for the most part in the business world. A CV will often list papers, theses, articles, etc. for the professional. In the business world, there is really nothing equivalent to such a collection of writing, and up until recently, a resume was all that was needed.
