Any other ladies hate "chick flicks?"

I have a hard time getting up the enthusiasm to go out with my galpals for movie night, because they inevitably want to throw down money to watch crappy romance/relationship movies. The whole genre of "chick flicks" pretty much repulses me, save for the likes of "Thelma and Louise." I would much rather, for instance, see "the Exorcism of Emily Rose" than "Must Love Dogs." But, seeing as I am always unanimously outvoted, guess which I've seen.:mad: :puke:

3. I LOVE horror movies!

My sweet neighbor will come over and watch one with me now and then,just to be nice, but that necessitates alot of eye-covering and grabbing onto me. Slightly annoying.

I like horror and thrillers. I like comedies, but I'm very picky about movie humor. I like action and scifi movies if they have a good plot or enough good special effects to detract from the fact that they have a lousy plot (good for a night when I want to be entertained w/out having to think.) I like intelligent, quirky movies (I love the Independent Film Channel.) I just don't like the sap-and-crap movies the market is continually saturated with. and apparently, as a woman, I'm supposed to.:eyes:

7. I like *good* chick flicks, which are far and few between.

Or whatever the saying is, LOL. There's not much to them, and that's what irritates me. It's like they have dozens of them in the film industry machine, just because women will see them. Not because they're original or good.

Chocolat, I liked. Pretty Woman, I liked (but I love Julia). I like romantic films, but so many chick flicks are of the basest kind of romance, just really mediocre love stories.

Must Love Dogs, Maid in Manhattan, the Wedding Planner, etc. etc. I would only watch on Encore. Maybe. If I happened to catch it, and nothing better was on.

But, I'd rather see one of them than Dumb and Dumber, or Barbershop 2, or some cheesy comedy like those.

I avoided Shakespeare in Love because it was directly marketed to women (which isn't to say I may not rent it one of these days).

LOVED Joy, Luck Club. Some may consider it a 'chick flick' I consider it a fabulous film.

I've been known to seek out films starring Will Ferrell, the Wilson brothers and Vince Vaughn. I don't like school boy, toilet humour but can't wait for 40 year old virgin to die down so I can see it in peace.

Love Tarantino's films, I know a lot of women don't necessarily like his stuff... I've seen the Godfather more so many times I've lost count, also part two. Not opposed to Scorcese, yes I turn away from the violence, but have enjoyed his work, too...

I absolutely did NOT expect to like Kill Bill, as I'm not usualy a fan of martial arts films. But I absolutely LOVED it. I've seen it so many times now, that I know lines from it.

My DVD collection has mostly horror, sci fi, fantasy, suspense, comedy and animation. Out of 300 DVDs I MIGHT have 8 chick flicks. The only ones I really like and watch more than once are:

About five years ago I saw a cheesy horror pic in a video store about a killer snow man. When I told my brother about it he asked me to go back and rent it. Knowing what I wanted I walked straight to the horror section. I was the only customer there and I could here one cashier say here's your chance go and talk to her. The other cashier replied but don't you see were she is going? The first cashier said that was kind of hot. Before the next customer came in they spent some time discussing how they loved women who didn't make them watch chick flicks.

I once broke up with a guy after a trip to a video store. I realized we weren't meant for each other when he started to argue with me because I wanted to rent A Clockwork Orange and he wanted to see Romeo and Juliet.

There are a few good films in the chick flick genre but most are too sappy for me.

some chick flicks. I also like some action adventure movies too. I also enjoy good murder mysterys.

I don't like gross out comedy flicks or horror flicks.

Also one type of movies that most people are reported to "Love" and are supposed to be "cool" and " always in", that I absoultetly deplore is "old classic films." It has nothing to do with them being filmed in black and white either.

I just find the acting too over the top. I know many actors were just starting to make the transition from theatre to film and thus this is why there was some over exagerration in terms of projecting the voice and making grand physical gestures. Knowing the reasons, however, still doesn't help me from getting distracted from the story by the "melodramatic acting." I am probably one of the only people alive who can't stand "Gone With the Wind" the film. I have had many a friend try to convert me in the past to an "old classics" fan but I still can't sit through them.

Is anyone else like me or am I in my "uncool uncouth" state all alone?

26. "How to Make an American Quilt" is a total chick flick

It's one of my favorite movies, because it speaks to women's life, and the compromises women make, and how they adjust to those compromises. Basic message is: there's no such thing as happily ever after, just after.

My girlfriends, all tough working chicks went to see it, and we all cried at the end.

It depends on the movie. Something based on Nicholas Sparks is going to be awful. But condemn romances, and you're condeming good stuff like "Moonstruck" or even "Gone with the Wind" (let's forget about the politics of that one and just think about the cinematic experience)

Oh, and "Truly Madly Deeply" is a total chick flick, and again, one of my favorites.

BF took me to see House of Flying Daggers for Valentine's Day, and my dumb ass chick-flick loving sister was all like, "omg he took you to a kung fu movie?! Weird!" I love kung fu movies. Especially wu xia films...I think they're far more romantic than that Hollywood Julia Roberts/Reese Witherspoon/whoever bullshit.

I completely agree. When I think "chick flick" I think of a movie with whoever Hollywood has deemed the "It girl" of the moment and Dermot Mulroney (he's in all these damn movies!), with a script cobbled together from mad libs. The title is usually three words, maybe four if they need to stick a pronoun in it somewhere. :P

I like romance, but I like it non-sappy and well done, with believable characters. Which means I hate chick flicks. The only one I even remotely liked was My Big Fat Greek Wedding, just because the family reminded me of my own (I'm not Greek, but black people act like that too :P).

Terms Of Endearment, Secrets Of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood, The Notebook, Four Weddings And A Funeral, Sleepless In Seattle, and many of the other so-called chick flicks.

I saw Bridget Jones's Diary and hated it. I didn't like Ghost either.

I did, however, like Runaway Bride and Dirty Dancing.

My favorite movies are thrillers, mysteries, action, and some types of fantasy/sci fi. I also like comedies and old movies.

And chick lit, for that matter. I also hate the fact that so many otherwise good movies insist on sticking in some sappy love story to make it more "interesting" when in fact it just takes away from the plot. There are other relationships besides the romantic and life isn't always about "true love."

My hubby, on the other hand, likes a lot of that schmaltzy stuff - we joke that we get along so well because he was meant to be a woman and I was meant to be a man. We compromise - every once in a while we'll watch some sappy romance but we follow it up with a good, bracing war flick.

Being sporadically employed, I can also go during a weekday, and it's awesome. Cheaper prices (if it's a matinee theater), the brats are all in school so no screaming...it's awesome. Going by myself also means no having to round people up or wait for when they're free.

People look at me like I'm a freak when I tell them that, but I don't care. The only movies I go to with people are big event nerd flicks, which I go to with my nerd herd, at midnight in costume...it's the camaraderie aspect that makes the evening. We've already got our Slytherin uniforms ready for the next Harry Potter. :silly:
