Need some advice, would you sign this?
Hi all, my son brought this permission slip home for a field trip. This was not the permission slip they used last year.

I realize that the teacher in charge will exercise precaution for the safety of students involved in this event, and I agree to assume all responsibility for any unforseen accident which might occur during travel or while participating in this program. I further assure that my son/daughter has been instructed to comply with the regulations of the school, teachers, sponsors, and/or chaperones who are in charge of the activity.
Note: Should the field trip be canceled for security reasons, students and the parents/guardians will incur rhe finacial expense beyond what can be reimbursed.

Now I may be clueless but it seems to me if my child is on a school sponsored field trip they should assume responsibilty if something should happen. Would you sign this? Am I being stubborn in saying I wouldn't?

2. Sign it
It's just a formality. I remember being told once that those permission slips aren't worth the paper they're written on...just a useless formality.

3. Well......
You can't release any liability before it is iincurred which usually makes a release form worth less than the paper it is printed on. However, you can agree to assume risk. And that is precisely what this form intends. The devil is in the details.

Not sure what state the OP resides in or what the applicable law is there but I can tell you that in some states this could very well consistute a binding assumption of the risk. I say "could" instead of "would" only because it does not specifically identify what risks are being assumed.

5. I live in Florida
That should say it all I guess. I guess the other thing I should say is that this is from a charter school. My children are getting a really really good education there and after years of problems with the county school district it has been so nice but it's things like this that make me cringe. I hate to hold my children back from going on field trips, in this case a play, but I also have to think of what is best for them.

6. They are just making sure you can't sue them or expect them
to pay any medical bills. By signing, you are agreeing that your insurance will handle any claims. This is normal and expected. Either sign it or cheat your kid out of any field trips.

8. Sign it - it's meaningless
Permission slips and waivers like this aren't worth the paper they are written on. You can't sign away your right to file legal action where appropriate in this general way. It is just a "first step" in any good risk management program for a school, a nonprofit organization, anyone who puts on an event or travels - that kind of thing.

Just sign it. It really is no big deal.

9. they still have full responsibility, relax
you can't sign away yr right to litigate if they abuse or neglect yr child

it's just junk paperwork

sort of like what you sign at the doc's office

you notice if he commmits malpractice, you can sue anyway, even tho you've signed such a form

all this paper to no purpose except to intimidate the naive
