are foot tattoos painful?
my 40th birthday is on Friday and I have wanted to get a tattoo for a long time so i thought 40 would be a good time. I have looked at many ideas and I really like the pretty tattoos on the feet. I was curious about the pain. I have read that foot tattoos are quite painful. I will get it anyway, the pain is not a factor I just want to know what to expect. Thanks!

1. I don't have one on my foot.
But I will say that it doesn't take very long to do (unless you are a fidgety person) so even if it is painful, it won't last too long.

2. now why would you want to go and do a thing like that?
You'll never be able to hide it unless you're planning to get one on the sole of your foot ...

3. Why would she want to hide it?
There is make-up made especially for tattoos though. And if all else fails, band-aids work well!

11. because people make judgements about tattoos
like it or not, that's reality.

I just remember this one woman at an office I worked at trying to hide her lower back tattoo ... everyone knew and the guys really seemed to enjoy yapping about it to no end.

13. That is just ridiculous. I understand that people do
make judgments and can poke fun. I have one on my back and it is very small. I have never once been embarrassed or felt the need to cover it. Not to say people haven't made joking comments about it, though. I do think tattoos are becoming much more common and accepted. If you are a person who is really sensitive to stuff like that, then you don't need to get a tattoo IMO. Just my two cents!

18. Well, a coworker of mine,
making way more money that I ever did, had an ankle tattoo. This was in a professional business setting. Nobody said anything to her about it.

Why would you EVER in a million years see your coworker's lower back tattoo? That is bizarre. Seems like it would be extremely easy to hide that.

24. I'm thinking the only reason they would see the co-workers that tattoo
on the lower back is probably because the co-worker made it visible for people to see.

Lowerback tattoos are easy to coverup - just don't wear low-rider jeans.

9. Your whole life long and you'll never ever want to hide it?
and you'll never need to wear a skirt with heels ever?

I dunno ... forever is a long, long time.

22. I don't understand why you think she would want
to hide it. Why get it if you are going to hide it? Not everyone is ashamed of having a tattoo!

14. Pumps were never mentioned
You simply said that she'd never be able to hide it, not that she'd never be able to hide it if she wanted to wear pumps.

25. She's an adult. Seems like she's had 40 years to mull it over,
weigh the pros and cons, and she's made her decision.

I've got a few tattoos, some easy to hide, some not so easy. I only once felt like I had to cover them up and it was a decision I made--no pressure from anybody else.

Don't worry so much Mizmoon. She'll be ok. ;)

6. I've heard that it does
I've been considering getting a tat on my foot too and every time I mention it, people go "OOOOOH, that'd hurt!". And when you think about it, they're probably right. You're foot's very boney, not much padding...yeah, I'd say it would hurt.

That said, if the tat is small, it won't take very long. ;)

7. The less fleshy the area, the more painful it's going to be.
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 09:35 AM by JimmyJazz
But, as long as you aren't getting something huge, it should be bearable. It feels like rug burn (and we all know what that feels like)

10. I have one on my ankle
I think it depends on the skill of the person doing the tattoo. Everyone told me ankle tats hurt worse because of the ankle bone, but it was actually the least painful of my 6 tats.

And even if it does hurt, it's not an unbearable pain.

12. I have one on my toe, and it hurt like holy hell!
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 10:00 AM by Lisa0825
But it only took about 25 minutes to do. I think I squeezed my friend's hand into permanent disfigurement, however.

If it were my first tattoo, I probably wouldn't have gotten a second. But it was my second, and the first wasn't so bad (lower back), so I still think about getting another one, knowing they don't all hurt as badly as my toe did.

Areas with very thin skin tend to hurt a lot, as do areas with lots of nerve endings. Are you ticklish on your feet or ankles? Are there areas you can tell a difference in degree of sensation? That can help you judge where it may hurt less.

And to the person saying you'll be judged forever for it.... if anyone chooses to judge me for my tats, that's a person I'd rather not have in my life anyway.

15. Oh, one more thing....
It only hurt more DURING the application. The healing wasn't any worse or longer. However, you'll need to keep in mind that you'll have a limited choice of shoes for about a week while it heels. If you wear shoes that cover the tattoo, you'll need to make sure they don't have any major pressure points on it, and that they don't rub the bandage off.

i am very excited to get this tattoo marking a milestone in my life. It's going to something with a flower with a peace sign incorporated into it for my new found activism. The tattoo guy is drawing some things up and i'll decide on Friday. I'll try and post pics.

16. regarding judging people with tattoos
I agree. My tattoos are personal, and I'm not going to worry about the opinion of someone that judgemental. They are entitled to their opinion, but it's not gonna be any skin off my tattooed back.

17. I have several...
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 10:11 AM by Mrs. Sniffa
I don't think they hurt alot, but I have heard the feet is one of the most tender of spots to get one, but then they said that about my wrist and that didn't hurt at all...
on edit: I have never regretted any of them and I love them all and hate hiding them....
