Do any of you know what a "Discordian Society" is???
I keep getting these emails asking me to be a Pope of Discordia and have a sworn allegiance to the Goddess Eris and the Most Holy Church of Discordia. What the hell is this? Is it a frat/sorority? Or is it a devil cult (which it sounds like to me)???

Any help/info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

1. It was a fake religion started by Kerry Thornley and Greg Hill in the late
50's, a precursor to The Church of the Subgenius and the Flying Spaghetti Monster Cult.

The principal teaching of discordianism was that chaos and disorganization were to be exalted. It was a spoof on some of the emerging cults of the 50's.

Kerry Thornley later gained notoriety as the only person to have written a book about Lee Harvey Oswald BEFORE the JFK assassination; Thornely and OSwald were buddies in the MArine Corps and both misfits: Oswald bewcause of his (supposed) mArxist leanings, and Thornely because of his odd mind and sense of humor.

Thornley later promulgated a series of bizarre conspiracy theories based on his time in the Marines with Oswald. Google "Kerry Thornely" and a lot of weird info will pop up.

12. Gosh, I miss Mike Gunderloy's Factsheet Five,
with Thornley's "Curmudgeon Corner" column.

But that is something a luddite would say.

Because Factsheet Five was pre-web, and I miss all those zines flooding into my PO Box, with their smells of rectal mucous and carbolic soap.

The web just can't deliver that.

5. It's all here...in the Principia Discordia
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~tilt/principia/

Not a Devil cult at all. Not even a cult. More like an anti-cult.

Robert Anton Wilson was a devotee, as were numerous other authors and artists. Discordianism DOES have a few adherents in modern neo-Paganism, but it's a loose group to say the least.

Of course no one asked you to join. Don't need to. You are already a leader.
