Is it just me, or are the home make-over shows inherently evil?

I'll admit, some of them feature some interesting ideas from a creative standpoint. But it seems there are too many of this sort of show and it also seems that some of the makeover folk are more about bullying people into FORCING people to decorate however they see fit.

It also seems to be a big part of this whole 'let's make people feel crappy about their lives, bodies, homes, etc. by showing them how much better WE can make them look--while simultaneously making some corporation, doctor or dentist richer.'

Or is it just me?

1. My problem with home improvement shows:
If just a fraction of the time spent WATCHING these shows were spent actually DOING home improvements, we'd all live in palaces.

2. That's a great point!
It seems that there are quite a few of these around now. I'm guessing they are popular with someone or else why would they continue to churn out more?

3. Plus they're cheap - few SAG actors or writers needed
As the SO of an Equity actor, I'm always aware of this.

6. I wasn't aware (until recently),that these shows
tend to cast actors, as opposed to actual decorators or designers. I guess they have one or two for authenticity...

I also heard an actor stating that 'reality tv' in general, (not just the decorating shows) has put many of the industry's writers out of work. That's sad, to me. :(

4. I really like "Design on a Dime"
and "Design Remix" because they're all about getting stuff done cheaply with what you have, and they can give you good ideas.

But I have gotten over my HGTV addiction recently for some reason. Oh yeah-- it's because I'm spending all my spare time in the yard, heh.

5. I hate it when....
they have makeover shows for people who are stinking rich and have really expensive, nice stuff to begin with.

I guess they need a "change". :eyes: :puke:

7. I've only seen that once
as I don't usually watch the shows--but it is one of the reasons I found it evil. It just seemed like a way to contribute to people feeling they don't have 'enough' money, stuff, furnishings, etc.

8. I wouldn't let any one of those "cheap design" shows near my home.
My home may need some work, but I've seen one to many episodes where some asshate designed decides to paint old woodwork or draw stenciles on hardwood floors. They all suck, IMHO.

9. There is never a clear thought process
in terms of how they get these ideas, or if they are just working on a dare. Have you seen the look of horror on some of the homeowners faces when they 'discuss' what they have in mind?

At least that's how it seemed to me the couple of times I've seen them.

11. As an Interior Designer, can unequivocally say
some of those shows have a few good ideas, but for the most part, the real task of getting it all done, and the amount of money needed (forget Design On A Dime...it costs a lot more than they actually show)is unrealistic.

Have done some redesign jobs, remaking some of the client's items to save money. The usual question is: Will we do this all in one weekend?
My reply: This is reality...Let's keep moving and here's your homework...

12. All reality-type shows are evil.
They keep playing highlights of them over and over again everywhere and it's sickening.

13. if by evil you mean -
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 11:03 PM by BigMcLargehuge
makes me want to strip naked and smear my flesh with rancid wombat feces then chase the ice cream truck around the neighborhood while screaming anti-martian epithets in fake Swahili until I am brought down by a powerful animal tranquilizer, beaten by the local cops (in hazmat suits "hey look! futuristic robots!") and end up with my picture on the cover of Weekly World News captioned as Britney Spears baby goes on rampage because one of those colorblind fucking morons put a bright blue border and chair rail on a green wall...

then yes.

14. ABC's Extreme makeover home edition actually has an awsome premise
they go out and either redo or create from scratch houses for people who truly need a place to call home and have no other way to afford it. I saw them build a house for a homeless family AND build a community center for everyone to enjoy. and that's not all, they also got the builders to hire the father! That show is amazing, they are truly doing great work.

18. A friend watches that show. She's shared some powerful
examples of the good work they've done. So I won't lump them in with the others.

Welcome to DU, charlie and algernon!

I know a lot of it is "showmanship" but overall I think they really are helping people on this show.
