4. Rich prick, started a website, pays 'bums' 3-4$ a 'shift' to hold up his
site name. Local advocates for the homeless are very unhappy, as it is exploitive and the name he coined for it is degrading.

He said on the bit, when asked if he thought the name 'bumvertising' was insulting:

Bum is defined as a lazy or shiftless person who relies on others to pay for their food housing etc... and if you 'just remove lazy and shiftless', it's the perfect description of these people.

He drives a Mercedes and just graduated from college.

9. Some local sandwich shops have the homeless hold signs for a
goddamn sandwich. Togos in Mission Valley San Diego is one.
Exploitation at its worst.

13. I have seen a posting on Craigslist about jobs holding signs here in Sac..
but he will employ (and I mean EMPLOY) people to hold and wave signs. He advertised for a manager's position to drive a van and pick up his folks, drive them to their locations, and drive them back to the pick up point, and he pays the signholders minimum wage. Manager was also responsible for getting new folks on the payroll when needed.

totally different sitch, IMO.

2. That guy was disgusting.
Hopefully someone will come up with a good way to sabotage him. I can't think of anything, but I trust the minds here can come up with something. I'll be checking back.

5. Such a dick.
Calling people bums is just horrible. He even said that he thought a lot of 'bums' choose to live on the street.

7. That's shitty.
Prototypical Republican Asshole.

But check this out: true story.

There is one guy in the small Indiana town I live in who chose to be homeless. It's such a small town that, at first, people wanted to help him out, so several people over a period of time offered him jobs to get him off the street. He refused. Said he didn't want a job. Crazy shit, eh?

8. I don't get it
Are you saying that this one case proves that "bums" chose that lifestyle? There's all kinds, but this is the exception not the rule.

I'll be back with some actual facts and statistics.

10. No, no, no.
I'm well aware that it's just an aberration.

I had heard of it before, but it was just kind of weird to see first-hand, especially in a tiny midwestern town.

That's all. :)

11. OK, but I was ready with my ammunition
So, for those less enlightened:

Across the survey cities it is estimated that single men comprise of 41 percent of the
homeless population, families with children 40 percent, single women 14 percent and
unaccompanied youth five percent. Sixty-six percent of the homeless families in the survey cities are headed by a single parent.

Survey city officials estimated that 49 percent of the population is African-American, 35
percent is white, 13 percent is Hispanic, two percent is Native American and one percent is
Asian.

It is estimated that persons considered mentally ill account for 23 percent of the homeless
population in the survey cities; substance abusers account for 30 percent. Seventeen
percent of the homeless in the survey cities are employed in full-or part-time jobs. Ten
percent are veterans.

Seventy percent of the survey cities report an increase in request for emergency shelter
during the last year. Requests for emergency shelter by homeless families with children increased in 78 percent of the survey cities during the last year.

Across the survey cities, the average increase in request for emergency shelter by homeless families with children was 7 percent.

From the 2004 prefinal report. The case studies were haunting. The full report can be found here:http://www.usmayors.org/uscm/home.asp
